Jason's tragic story ended in Hampden Park, Eastbourne, East Sussex, in April 2022. He took his own life. His family believes that waiting over two years justfor an initial appointment with an NHS gender identity service became too muchand played a major part in his despair.
Systemic failures and inquest findings
An inquest held in April revealed numerous failings in services meantto support Jason, suggesting these shortfalls might have contributedto his untimely death. Jason's stepfather, Mark Pulman, recalls how thislackof support visibly wore Jason down. "It broke Jason," he confided, remembering how hope seemedto slip away from his stepson.
Legal action and alleged police failures
In their pursuitof accountability, Mark and Jason's mother, Emily, have taken legal steps againstthe police, alleging failures in their response. The couple claim thateven when Jason was reported missing, police didn't act promptly, taking 10 hours before an officer showed up at their home.
While Sussex Police have offered condolences, they've declinedto comment further due tothe ongoing legal proceedings. Jason's family remains firm, asserting that labeling him as "medium risk" ledto an inadequate response that could have changedthe courseof events.
"We need accountabilityto drive change," Emily insists, emphasizingthe importanceof overhaulingthe system so no other family endures this kindof heartache.
