Rutger published: U2 Honors Renée Good with New Song in Latest EP

Renowned Irish rock band U2 has released a poignant new EP, featuring a track dedicated to the memory of Renée Good, a 37-year-old queer mother tragically killed by an ICE agent. This release, titled Days of Ash, is a powerful artistic response to ongoing social and political upheavals around the globe.

U2 announced the release of the EP through a heartfelt post on their official Instagram account. The band describes Days of Ash, which dropped on February 18 to coincide with Ash Wednesday, as a reflection on “the extraordinary courage displayed by individuals standing on the frontlines of freedom.”

American Obituary: A Tribute to Renée Good

One of the standout tracks from the EP is “American Obituary,” a deeply moving song that pays tribute to Renée Good. The song captures the harrowing events of January 7th, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Renée was fatally shot at close range during a peaceful protest. The incident shook the world, as she was subsequently mischaracterized by the authorities as a ‘domestic terrorist’—a label that sparked widespread outcry and disbelief.

Bono, U2’s legendary lead singer, voiced his outrage in the Instagram post, emphasizing the gravity of the incident. He started penning the song’s lyrics immediately following Good’s death, expressing his dismay at what he described as “an attempt to assassinate meaning itself… the meaning of words… the meaning of truth.” According to Bono, this tragic event marked a turning point, revealing the broader struggles faced by those advocating for justice and truth.

Inspiration from Global Struggles

Renée Good’s story is just one of the narratives that inspired Days of Ash. The EP also highlights the bravery of individuals like Sarina Esmailzadeh, an Iranian teenager who lost her life during protests against the Islamic Republic, and Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, a figure in the award-winning documentary No Other Land, who was killed by an Israeli settler. Additionally, the EP includes a collaboration with Ukrainian singer Taras Topolia, who joined his local Territorial Defense Forces amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Together with U2 and Ed Sheeran, Topolia contributes to the track “Yours Eternally.”

U2’s artistic endeavor is accompanied by a special 40th anniversary digital edition of their official fanzine, Propaganda. This edition features song lyrics, exclusive interviews with Bono, and essays that delve deeper into the themes explored in the EP.

A New Era for U2

Days of Ash marks U2’s first collection of new music since their 2017 album Songs of Experience. The band is actively working on their 15th studio album, which Bono has described as more “joyful” in contrast to the somber tones of the EP. He reassures fans that while Days of Ash addresses themes of defiance and lament, brighter, more celebratory songs are on the horizon.

Bono elaborates on this shift in mood, stating, “You can only kick at the darkness for so long… We’re going to try to make the light brighter real soon.” The band regards Days of Ash as a self-contained project, not intended to be part of their upcoming full-length album.

U2’s commitment to highlighting significant social issues through their music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. As they prepare for future releases, the band remains dedicated to using their platform to amplify voices that champion justice, equality, and human rights.
