In a disturbing incident that has raised concerns about ongoing violence against the LGBTQ+ community, two teenagers have been charged with hate crimes after a vicious attack on Kady Grass, a 19-year-old lesbian, at a McDonald's restaurant in Carpentersville, Illinois. The attack, which occurred on May 13, has left the young woman with severe injuries and lasting emotional trauma.
While visiting the fast-food restaurant with her family, Kady Grass was subjected to anti-gay slurs by two cisgender males. The incident escalated quickly when the two attackers, identified as 19-year-old John Z. Kammrad and an unnamed 16-year-old accomplice, began to physically assault her. According to reports, the assailants used derogatory language, including calling her a "fa**ot," before launching their violent attack.
The assault was brutal and unprovoked. Kady was physically restrained by Kammrad while the younger accomplice kicked and stomped on her head. The attack was so severe that it resulted in significant injuries, including a broken nose and a hemorrhage in one eye. Kady has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of this traumatic experience.
The charges against the attackers are substantial. Kammrad faces five felony charges, which include three counts of aggravated battery, one count of mob action, and one count of committing a hate crime. The 16-year-old accomplice faces the same charges. These charges reflect the seriousness of the offense and the determination of law enforcement to address hate-motivated violence.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser has publicly condemned the attack, stating, “These allegations are serious and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Everyone deserves to feel safe in public spaces, and no one should be attacked because of their gender identity or sexual orientation.”
Kady Grass has spoken out about the impact of the attack, describing the deep sense of violation she felt. "They attacked me because I like women," she explained. "I was simply existing that day, spending time with my family, when I was brutally attacked. I did nothing to deserve this." Her resilience and determination to overcome the ordeal have been an inspiration to many.
Despite the violence she endured, Kady refuses to see herself as a victim. "I genuinely believe that their plan was to kill me," she told one news outlet. "But I want people to know that I am a survivor. They tried to ruin my life, but instead, they ruined their own." Her courage and strength have resonated with the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
Following the attack, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist Kady with her medical expenses and legal fees. The overwhelming support from the community has been heartening, as the fundraiser has surpassed its initial goal of $5,000, raising $75,775 to date. This financial support will help Kady in her journey to recovery and in seeking justice.
Kady’s story highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the critical need for greater awareness and protection against hate crimes. Her hope is that her experience will encourage others to stand up for themselves and not be deterred by fear of potential violence.
As the legal proceedings continue, Kady’s bravery and the community’s support serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience within the LGBTQ+ community. Her story is a call to action for continued advocacy and support for those who face discrimination and violence because of their identity or orientation.
