Rutger published: TV Anchor Responds to Criticism Over Inclusive Holiday Coverage

An outspoken critic in the Palm Springs area is receiving a metaphorical lump of coal after expressing dissatisfaction with a festive "gay elf."

A viewer of a local Palm Springs television station recently wrote a letter to voice their discontent about the appearance of this elf and other inclusive elements during the station's "Holiday Lights" feature, which showcased vibrant and spectacular holiday decorations across the Coachella Valley.

Celebrating Diversity with Holiday Cheer

Accompanied by the fabulous drag performer Sandy Claus, the holiday duo delighted viewers by guiding them through some of the most dazzling holiday light displays in the welcoming community. The show's anchor, Tim O'Brien, described the feature as a celebration of joy and inclusivity, emphasizing the fun spirit Sandy Claus and her elf brought to the holiday season before directly addressing the criticism.

"Holiday Lights is all about joy and fun," O'Brien stated. "That's exactly what Sandy Claus and her elf bring to the table. Who could take issue with that?"

A Humbug Response

However, not everyone felt the same. The critic, referred to as Roy, expressed disappointment with the holiday program. Roy claimed, "The majority of the Coachella Valley does not believe in 32 genders" and stated that "many of us would rather not have a flamboyant drag queen and a retired gay elf frolicking around our holiday displays." He also criticized the presence of a sign indicating a display was "drag queen approved."

Roy's letter continued, "While I understand your commitment to the inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community, you may have overstepped here."

Setting the Record Straight

O'Brien, visibly passionate, responded firmly to the accusations. He pointed out the absence of any "drag queen approved" signage as Roy suggested, emphasizing the spirit of inclusivity. "Nowhere on that sign do you see the words 'drag queen approved,'" O'Brien declared.

Addressing the "32 genders" comment, O'Brien responded, "Who mentioned 32 genders? If there are 32 genders, we welcome them all." He underscored the station's commitment to inclusivity, stating, "We are all about embracing everyone."

Questioning the Criticism

In a direct address to Roy, O'Brien questioned how the show could possibly affect him personally. "How does this impact your daily life?" O'Brien asked. "You still have to wake up and go to work, right? You still have to pay your taxes."

O'Brien further defended the participants of the holiday tour, taking issue with the derogatory reference to the "retired gay elf." He clarified that Scott, the elf, had not publicly discussed his sexual orientation, labeling Roy's letter inappropriate.

"We would much prefer to have a 'flaming drag queen' and a 'retired gay elf' in our yard than a grinch like you," O'Brien asserted, closing his remarks with a festive spirit.

"Merry Christmas to all," O'Brien might have concluded, "but to Roy, we wish you good night!" This festive defense of inclusivity and joy highlights the ongoing importance of representation and acceptance during the holiday season.
