Rutger published: Turkey's Controversial 'Year of the Family' and Its Impact on the LGBTQ+ Community

Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has made a bold announcement: 2024 will be dedicated as Turkey's 'Year Of The Family.' The initiative aims at reviving traditional family values, encouraging marriage, and tackling Turkey's falling birth rate. But, it's not all smooth sailing—Turkey's LGBTQ+ communities are particularly worried about what this means.

Reviving Turkey's family values

Ever since Erdoğan took office in 2014, he's been a strong proponent, some might even say champion, when it comes down on traditional values. With this 'Year Of The Family' campaign, he's looking at a countrywide resurgence. How? By offering financial perks like interest-free loans up 150,000 lira (around £3,500 or $4,200) aimed straight at newlyweds and providing extra help based on how many kids they decide or have.

In a speech in Ankara, Erdoğan expressed worry over Turkey's shrinking birth rate and growing elderly population. For first time ever percentage-wise they make up more than 10%! Clearly, demographics are tricky here.

The blame game: Consumer culture and LGBTQ+ communities

Erdoğan thinks today's consumer mindset makes people wary about starting families due fear both financially and otherwise. And in quite a controversial move, he took aim also at Turkey's own LGBTQ+ community saying they're endangering family values.

"It falls upon us all protect our kids from these damaging ideologies," Erdoğan declared—taking direct shots neoliberal cultural shifts, which he argues spawned movements like LGBTQ+. He's consistently stood against LGBTQ+ rights in his speeches, seeing them as a threat rather than progress.

LGBTQ+ challenges in Turkey: A daunting reality

Unfortunately, this kind rhetoric only adds fuel fire facing Turkey's LGBTQ+ individuals. Sure, homosexuality here may be legal on paper but try seeking recognition or rights around things like same-sex marriage? Civil unions? Domestic partnerships? Zero recognition there. And let's not talk about hurdles when it comes military service or adopting kids! Discrimination protections are bare minimum too.

While expressing freedom gets regularly squashed through bans on Pride events/festivals across country, don't think community just takes it lying down—they fight back! Take 2023 Pride Month, countless detained cities like Izmir/Istanbul standing firm against governmental pushback.

Despite challenges LGBTQ+ community in Turkey stay determined keep advocating change—a member Istanbul Pride committee stressed amongst them exists strong awareness drive societal transformation, governmental opposition be damned.

Mixed reactions at home and abroad

Internationally speaking? Human rights groups like clockwork lambast Turkey over its treatment dealings with LGBTQ+ citizens. The country really struggles when stacked against others on global indices such ILGA-Europe's rainbow map due harsh policies lacking protections.

Domestically though this 'Year Of The Family' might seem noble intent by government, critics worry division could deepen instead unity it claims strive promote.

So as we navigate through what unfolds during 'Year Of The Family', key keep watch impact felt most vulnerably within Turkey's own LGBTQ+ community. Internationally voices continue call out urging respect, inclusion equality regardless sexual orientation or gender identity remain priority engaging constructive dialogue essential.
