Tulisa: Support from the LGBTQ+ Community During My Challenging Times
The LGBTQ+ community has always shown a remarkable ability to rally around individuals facing adversities, particularly women who have been unfairly treated by the media. This was the experience of Tulisa Contostavlos, a former member of the British hip-hop group N-Dubz, a solo artist, and a past judge on The X Factor. During the early 2010s, Tulisa found herself in the harsh spotlight of the British tabloids, often the target of relentless and unfair criticism.
Like many women who have been scrutinized and misrepresented, Tulisa became a figure of support for the LGBTQ+ community. "It's strange," Tulisa reflects, "during some of the toughest periods of my life, when it felt like the entire industry and many people were dismissing me, the LGBTQ+ community was embracing me more than ever." This unwavering support became a source of strength for Tulisa, as she navigated her way through challenging times.
Tulisa recalls the online support she received from the LGBTQ+ community, both from fans and others who simply believed in her. "There was this energy of 'You're not going to bring her down; she's with us,'" Tulisa says. "It was that kind of support that I felt." Despite being front-page news and facing severe media scrutiny, Tulisa felt a sense of belonging at Pride events and shows.
The media's portrayal of Tulisa reached a critical point when she faced a potential four-year prison sentence due to a drug charge. However, the case was dismissed in 2014 after it was revealed that the evidence had been manipulated by a tabloid journalist. Despite the turmoil, the LGBTQ+ community continued to show their support for Tulisa, offering her a safe space to express herself and feel accepted.
Tulisa attributes the support from the LGBTQ+ community to a shared understanding of being misrepresented or judged harshly. "I think everyone in the LGBTQ+ community, at some point, has had to be unapologetically themselves and say, 'This is who I am,'" Tulisa explains. "Even though my situation was different, there was a feeling of relatability, which is why I believe we connected so well."
In the entertainment industry, where strong women are sometimes met with skepticism, Tulisa found the LGBTQ+ community to be a place that celebrates confidence and authenticity. "The community always uplifts strong, confident women," Tulisa observes. "In many parts of the industry, you don't always get that. There's often this notion of 'Who do you think you are to be so confident?' But within the LGBTQ+ community, that confidence is welcomed and reciprocated."
Tulisa’s initial interactions with the LGBTQ+ community came through long-lasting friendships, but it was her performances at iconic venues like Heaven that solidified her connection to the community. Since launching her solo career in 2012, Tulisa has been a regular performer at Pride events, which she describes as having an amazing atmosphere and providing her with a sense of safety and acceptance.
Despite a hiatus from solo performances, during which N-Dubz reunited for a tour in 2023, Tulisa is eager to return to the stage. "It's always such a great crowd," she says. "I always receive such a warm response from the LGBTQ+ community. I feel super safe up there on stage."
Tulisa is set to perform at the Clapham Grand’s Pride Afterparty, a performance she is eagerly anticipating. Joined by Drag Race UK icon Bimini, Tulisa promises a show filled with energy, including her rendition of "Scream and Shout" and classic N-Dubz tracks like "Girls" and "Best Behaviour." She hints at the possibility of another N-Dubz reunion in the future, much to the delight of her fans.
Her performance at the Clapham Grand coincides with her best friend's birthday, promising a night of celebration. "If you see me with a drink on stage, don't judge," Tulisa jokes, confident in the acceptance of her actions by the LGBTQ+ community.
Through resilience and mutual support, Tulisa and the LGBTQ+ community have formed a bond that transcends the adversities they have faced. Tulisa is grateful for the embrace she received when she needed it the most, and she continues to be an ally and advocate for the community in return.
