Recently, Donald Trump claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was "rude" during a visit from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who happens also be openly gay. Trump insisted that no meeting between them took place. But here's where things get interesting: photos say otherwise. There's documented evidence showing Zelensky and Bessent did indeed meet, challenging Trump's narrative.
Bessent's trip had a clear-cut agenda: a diplomatic mission focused on discussing Ukraine's rare earth minerals, which are quite valuable. The U.S. was interested in these resources, hoping they could secure access in return, offering continued support in Ukraine's struggle against Russian aggression.
Despite what Trump suggested, images from their meeting at Mariinskyi Palace were made public. Security analyst Jimmy Rushton shared them on social media, unequivocally confirming that Bessent and Zelensky did meet, complete with photographs.
"Zelensky met with Bessent at Mariinskyi Palace," Rushton posted. "Multiple photographs were taken and published during their meeting." Financial Times correspondent Christopher Miller, who was there, vouched that these images were real and provided firsthand accounts.
Miller shared, "I was right there when this photograph was taken. Just an hour or so later, I saw both Zelensky and Bessent emerge from another meeting inside his office and meet with us reporters." His account takes Trump's story apart.
Trump's comments stirred quite a bit, prompting fact-checkers left and right. He called Zelensky a "dictator," which doesn't quite add up since Zelensky was elected democratically. Sure, elections are on hold due, but Zelensky still enjoys strong support back home.
Trump also claimed Zelensky's approval was a measly 4%, but polls show a different picture—57% trust him. This glaring inconsistency calls Trump's words questionable at best.
And then there was his claim suggesting Ukraine started their conflict with Russia. This ignores history. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and all this fighting? Mostly on Ukrainian turf. Trump sounds a bit like he's echoing Russian President Vladimir Putin, who blamed Ukraine by bringing up Crimea's 2014 annexation.
Bessent's mission included bringing a contract proposal on Ukraine's rare earth minerals. The deal proposed Ukraine sharing 50% revenue from mining with America, under a New York court's jurisdiction. Zelensky wanted a thorough review and Parliament's nod before signing, which makes sense.
Sadly, Trump's comments have overshadowed this diplomatic mission, pulling focus from critical talks. Zelensky's cautious stance wasn't unreasonable—it's just how international agreements are handled.
The spread misinformation doesn't just cloud diplomatic efforts; it also messes with public trust. Especially within LGBTQ+ circles, it reminds us why reporting and representation matter.
