According to Hartmann, these grand demonstrations are less about genuine power and more indicative of Trump's inherent weaknesses.
Hartmann draws attention to various instances where Trump's actions have seemingly defied legal norms, attempted to overshadow economic struggles, and utilized military forces in a manner that appears to target American citizens. "These are not the actions of a strong leader," Hartmann claims, adding that such behavior is symptomatic of a leader feeling extraordinarily vulnerable.
Comparison with Historical Strongmen
Hartmann compares Trump to historic authoritarian figures such as Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, Benito Mussolini, and Adolf Hitler. Unlike Trump, these leaders enjoyed high approval ratings during their rise to power, largely due to their ability to address and alleviate national crises. For instance, Hitler implemented massive public works and social welfare programs that significantly reduced unemployment in Germany, garnering substantial public support.
In contrast, Trump has struggled with public approval. Despite his presidency spanning multiple terms, his approval ratings remain lackluster. Hartmann notes, "He failed to secure over 50% of the popular vote in the 2024 election, and even in 2016, he lost the popular vote."
As of October 2025, surveys indicate that around 44.2% of Americans approve of Trump's presidency, with 52.1% disapproving, according to Nate Silver's Silver Bulletin. Other polls, such as those from RealClearPolitics and Gallup, place his approval ratings between 40% and 45%, making him one of the least popular U.S. presidents at this stage.
The Role of Fear in Trump's Political Strategy
Hartmann emphasizes that Trump's political strategy hinges heavily on fear. Unlike past presidents or foreign authoritarian figures who commanded widespread national support, Trump relies on a fervent yet comparatively small base. This base's intensity is unmatched by broader majoritarian enthusiasm, which limits his ability to consolidate power successfully.
Indeed, Hartmann observes that Republicans who stand up to Trump often experience a surge in popularity, suggesting that opposition to Trump can be politically advantageous. "Fear is the glue holding the GOP together under Trump," Hartmann argues, suggesting that his threats of punishment against dissenters and rewards for loyalists have thus far maintained party cohesion.
However, relying on fear is a precarious strategy. Hartmann warns that leaders who use fear to control can become ensnared by it, as it limits their maneuverability and isolates them from potential allies. "Trump's frantic maneuvers in the early years of his presidency demonstrate an awareness that his time to enforce a strongman regime is limited," Hartmann suggests.
Hope for Democratic Resilience
Despite these challenges, Hartmann remains optimistic about the resilience of American democracy. He highlights recent public demonstrations, such as the "No Kings" marches, as evidence of widespread opposition to authoritarianism and a deep-seated American tradition of resisting despotism.
Hartmann concludes with a hopeful message: "History shows that a vast majority of attempts to dismantle democracy in wealthy nations fail. There is a strong precedent for democratic resilience in the United States, a country that has never accepted kings or dictators."
This analysis serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and civic engagement in safeguarding democratic principles, particularly for marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ population, who often bear the brunt of authoritarian policies.
