In a recent address to Congress on Tuesday, March 4, former President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to a series of controversial policies, particularly those affecting the transgender community, while also making remarks that have attracted significant attention and criticism.
During his speech, Trump brought up what he described as wasteful government spending, particularly highlighting a claim about funding for 'transgender mice.' "We found $8 million for making mice transgender. This is real," he announced. However, this claim has been disputed by fact-checkers. CNN reports that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) allocated funds to projects involving hormone therapy in monkeys, not mice, with the goal of understanding its effects on the immune system in relation to HIV susceptibility.
In addition to his comments on government spending, Trump praised the numerous executive orders he has issued since taking office. He asserted, “We have accomplished more than most administrations in four or eight years, and we are just getting started.”
Trump's policies have frequently targeted the LGBTQ+ community, with a particular emphasis on transgender individuals. During his address, he highlighted his administration’s efforts to combat what he described as 'toxic ideologies' in educational institutions. "My administration is also working to protect our children from these toxic ideologies in our schools," he stated.
He referenced a well-publicized case involving January Littlejohn, associated with the group Moms for Liberty, where a Florida school was accused of socially transitioning a child without parental consent. Although the case was dismissed in federal court, Trump used it to underline his stance: “Stories like this are why shortly after taking office I signed an executive order banning our schools from indoctrinating our children with transgender ideology.”
The former president also reiterated his support for policies restricting gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary youth. “I also signed an order to cut off all taxpayer funding to any institution that engages in the sexual mutilation of our youth,” he declared, referring to medical interventions that are part of gender transition processes.
He called for Congress to enact legislation that would permanently ban and criminalize such procedures on minors, claiming, "Now, I want Congress to pass a bill permanently banning and criminalizing sex changes on children and forever ending the lie that any child is trapped in the wrong body." This statement aligns with a recurring narrative among certain conservative circles.
Trump's rhetoric included a familiar refrain often used by far-right groups, suggesting that children are "perfect exactly the way God made you." Religious leaders and figures, however, such as Pope Francis, have offered more inclusive views, welcoming LGBTQ+ individuals to participate fully in the faith community.
Trump concluded his address by declaring victory over what he termed 'wokeness' in various sectors of society. "We’re getting wokeness out of our schools and out of our military – it is already out, and it is out of our society. We don’t want it. Wokeness is trouble. Wokeness is bad. It’s gone, it’s gone, and we feel so much better for it. Don’t we?"
Trump's speech has sparked discussions and debates across the nation, both within political circles and among the general public. Critics argue that his policies and rhetoric continue to marginalize vulnerable communities, while supporters assert that they are necessary to uphold traditional values.
This address marks yet another chapter in the ongoing cultural battles that have defined much of the political landscape in recent years. As Trump and his allies continue to push their agenda, the response from those advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity remains steadfast, highlighting the broader societal debate on these critical issues.
