Donald Trump has once again propagated the baseless claim that Olympic boxer Imane Khelif is transgender, highlighting his persistent misinformation regarding transgender athletes in sports.
Khelif, an Algerian athlete, became embroiled in a gender-related controversy at the Paris Games, along with Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, when she was disqualified in 2023 after failing eligibility criteria set by the boxing governing body, the IBA. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later stripped the IBA of its world governing status due to integrity and governance issues.
Prominent figures like JK Rowling and Elon Musk publicly criticized Khelif's participation, alleging she and Yu-ting were born male. Despite these claims, both athletes met the necessary criteria to compete, have always identified as female, and do not consider themselves transgender. The IOC firmly supported Khelif and Yu-ting, with spokesperson Mark Adams stating their involvement was not a transgender issue.
Khelif, who is not transgender, eventually won a gold medal and proceeded to take legal action over "aggravated cyber harassment," specifically naming JK Rowling and Elon Musk in her lawsuit.
During a commencement address at the University of Alabama, Trump reiterated the unfounded theory that Khelif is a transgender woman. Khelif has consistently refuted this claim, asserting her identity as a cisgender woman. To a supportive audience, Trump proclaimed, "As long as I'm president, we will always protect women's sports. Men will not play in women's sports," further stating, "No way. They say it's an 80-20 issue. No, it's a 97-3 issue, I think. No, men will not be playing in women's sports. I said that, and I classified it with a very powerful executive order, as you know. It's done."
The executive order, known as 'Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,' prohibits transgender women from participating in female sports and mandates withdrawing federal funds from educational programs perceived to hinder fair athletic opportunities for women and girls.
Trump continued to reference Khelif's match against Italy's Angela Carini, which concluded 46 seconds into the bout when Carini conceded and refused to shake hands with Khelif. This swift victory amplified online criticism against Khelif, with JK Rowling tweeting an image of Khelif post-match, commenting, "Could any picture sum up our new men’s rights movement better? The smirk of a male who’s knows he’s protected by a misogynist sporting establishment enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head, and whose life’s ambition he’s just shattered." Carini, however, has since expressed willingness to apologize to Khelif for her conduct.
At the graduation event, Trump remarked, "They had a great champion, a female boxer, and after one punch she walked back to the corner and said, ‘I can’t get hit like that, I've never been hit like that before.'"
Since returning to the White House, Trump has enforced numerous anti-trans policies, extending beyond boxing to sports such as weightlifting and swimming.
Khelif, who relishes her achievement, remains unfazed by Trump's comments regarding the transgender community, stating, "I am not transgender. This does not concern me, and it does not intimidate me. That is my response."
In a conversation with ITV News, Khelif admitted the persistent international campaign against her by notable individuals "hurt a lot" and severely affected her family, particularly her mother, who required medical attention due to the stress.
Despite the adversity, Khelif remains steadfast in her resolve, proudly defending her gold medal and continuing to pursue her dreams. "Of course, I defend with everything I have this gold medal… I continue my dream, my everything," she affirmed.
