David Urban challenges democratic concerns over marriage equality

Recently, David Urban, who was a senior advisor during Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, voiced his critique against what he sees as Democratic fear-mongering about marriage equality's future. He's known in political talk circles and didn't hold back in his column.

Hillary Clinton's worries about marriage equality

Urban turned his sights specifically on Hillary Clinton. She'd shared her fears on a podcast called *Raging Moderates*, concerned that marriage equality might face a similar fate as abortion, with decisions pushed back onto individual states. Her comments kicked off a lively debate about LGBTQ+ rights in America.

Urban argues: There's no need, fear isn't warranted

In his article, Urban made his stance clear: he thinks these fears are misplaced. “If you keep telling us that disaster looms, eventually people tune out,” he said. Urban feels confident that marriage equality isn't in jeopardy, and believes that if it were, people from all political sides would defend it.

Strong support among voters

To back his argument, Urban pointed out a poll done by Center line America, a group known in Republican circles. It showed a solid 72% support among registered voters. Even when people had a chance not pick aside, support stayed strong. However, he did admit that, according some polls, GOP backing has slightly dipped since last year.

Legal battles and Kim Davis

On legal challenges, Urban brought up Kim Davis, a county clerk in Kentucky whose court case has drawn attention. Some see it as a threat Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. But Urban mentioned legal experts who think it unlikely Obergefell will be overturned due its profound impact on existing marriages and family life.

Critique on democratic tactics

Urban stressed he values marriage equality, yet believes Democrats are using it as a political pawn. He accused them raising fears about losing rights, while claiming society and laws are heading in a positive direction. According him, this fear-mongering serves political ends by sowing division and boosting fundraising.

Religious freedom in focus

Urban did concede there's an important dialogue around religious liberty and equal rights. He noted Kim Davis's case touches these sensitive issues, and even some Supreme Court justices have shown interest in revisiting related decisions, citing religious freedom worries.

Challenges ahead, especially on transgender rights

Despite Urban's reassurances, uncertainty lingers in political air. Just before his column came out, Texas moved allow county judges refuse same-sex marriages, underlining ongoing struggles. While marriage equality remains vital, Urban recognized that transgender rights face more immediate threats. Legal voices within LGBTQ+ circles agree marriage equality isn't in imminent danger, but they emphasize staying alert.

Supreme Court's pending decision on Kim Davis

The Supreme Court will soon decide whether it'll hear Kim Davis's appeal. It's a long shot, with only a handful cases selected annually. Bill Powell, attorney representing couple in case against Davis, thinks it unlikely. “No judge on U.S. Court Appeals was interested in Davis's rehearing petition, and we're confident Supreme Court will dismiss it too,” Powell said.
