On Wednesday, a passionate group of transgender Utahans and their allies gathered at the state Capitol building to protest what has been described as one of the most severe anti-trans bills introduced by Republican lawmakers in the state. The bill, H.B. 183, is part of a broader legislative trend that many see as an attack on the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals.
State Representative Sahara Hayes, the legislature's sole openly queer member, was present at the protest and expressed her concerns about the bill. Hayes, who is married to a transgender woman, spoke candidly about the challenges ahead, stating, “I’m anticipating a big fight.” She highlighted the bill's potential impact and described it as the most detrimental of the anti-LGBTQ+ bills put forward this session.
The proposed legislation seeks to make sweeping changes by replacing the term "gender" with "sex" across state laws. This change would repeal existing protections related to gender identity, affecting areas such as housing, employment, and criminal justice. The bill also aims to restrict amendments to birth certificates, enforce the use of "biological sex" on official documents, and prohibit transgender individuals from working with children in state healthcare facilities. Additionally, in custody disputes, the bill would favor parents who reject a child’s gender identity when it differs from their assigned sex at birth.
Representative Jen Dailey-Provost of Salt Lake City criticized the bill, calling it “misguided” and “mean-spirited.” Her remarks reflect the sentiments of many who believe the legislation to be an unnecessary and harmful distraction from other pressing issues.
The event was organized by Veronika DaVil, a local drag artist and advocate for transgender rights. She emphasized the importance of solidarity and community visibility, stating, “We’re here because trans people are continuously being attacked in Utah and across the country. Frankly, we’ve had enough.”
DaVil underscored the need for broader public support, noting that trans individuals are often targeted to divert attention from larger societal problems. “Attacking trans people won’t make rent cheaper. Attacking trans people won’t make our groceries more affordable. It is a smoke screen,” she asserted.
Kree Arias, a transgender man and member of the grassroots group Utah March, also spoke at the rally. He noted that the LGBTQ+ community is “under attack,” with H.B. 183 being just the latest example. Arias hopes that by raising awareness of the bill, more people will join the fight for equality and justice.
When asked what he would convey to lawmakers, Arias expressed a desire for dialogue beyond identities. “I don’t want to talk about our transness or our gayness, or any of that. I want to talk about who we are as people. We’re brothers, we’re sisters, we’re uncles,” he said. His message was one of humanity and acceptance: “Being ourselves, being beautiful and proud.”
The rally saw over 60 participants who marched through the Capitol on the legislature’s second day in session. This demonstration followed similar protests against broader political issues, including policies from previous administrations and ongoing international conflicts.
The collective action highlights the ongoing struggle for transgender rights and equality. As the legislative session progresses, advocates remain vigilant and committed to ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights protected.
This protest is a reminder of the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community in the face of adversity. It is a call to action for all who support equality and justice to stand in solidarity with those fighting against discrimination and prejudice.
