Discovering Authenticity Amidst Adversity
Eight years ago, Paula Griffin faced a life-changing diagnosis: bladder cancer. This news not only brought a medical challenge but also sparked a profound personal revelation. It was during this tumultuous time that Paula came to fully accept her identity as a trans woman.
Recalling the period before her diagnosis, Paula admits she was "in denial" about the symptoms she experienced, which included blood in her urine. "I was two weeks away from major organ failure," she recalls, highlighting how close she came to a critical health crisis.
According to Cancer Research UK, bladder cancer affects around 10,500 individuals in the UK annually. Paula's journey involved extensive surgery — she had a stoma placed and an artificial bladder, or neo-bladder, created from part of her small intestine. Tragically, on the same day as her surgery, Paula lost her older sister, Kerry, to colorectal cancer.
Finding Strength and Self-Acceptance
Despite the challenges, Paula reflects on how she has always known she was trans. "I lacked the courage to embrace it," she confesses. Her journey to self-acceptance began after a "major breakdown" during her youth, which led her back home to Cornwall. There, her mother introduced her to a transgender friend, an encounter that would leave a lasting impact.
However, upon returning to London, Paula found herself in the "toxic masculine" world of recruitment work, a setting that drove her to coping mechanisms like heavy drinking and smoking to suppress her true identity. It was during her cancer recovery that she began to evaluate the life choices that had brought her to that point.
Embracing a New Life
As Paula worked on herself, she made a pivotal change by updating her identity on social media, a step met with acceptance from her community. In 2019, she began the transition process, which allowed her to live more authentically. Embracing her true self brought a newfound confidence and helped her eliminate toxicity from her life, including smoking.
Paula's newfound confidence led her to become a goalkeeper for a non-binary football club in London. She even played in the Women's FA Cup, showcasing her skills and breaking barriers. "I’m doing things I could never believe," she shares, emphasizing her fearless approach to life.
One moment of significant "trans joy" was when Paula received her new passport in 2022, allowing her to travel to Peru. There, she experienced acceptance and inclusion among fellow travelers, which reinforced her sense of authenticity.
A Resilient Spirit Amidst Challenges
Paula also commented on a recent UK Supreme Court ruling that excluded trans women from the legal definition of "woman." While acknowledging the ruling, she maintains that it doesn’t affect how she lives her life. "To me, it’s a hollow victory," she says, asserting her commitment to live authentically regardless of legal definitions.
Despite the ruling, Paula remains optimistic, fueled by the support she receives from her community. "I will stand up and be myself," she declares, ready to face any challenges ahead with a network of allies behind her.
A Testament to Resilience and Hope
In honor of her sister and as a testament to the power of resilience, Paula plans to participate in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life in partnership with Standard Life in London's Hyde Park on July 27. Her participation aims to demonstrate that cancer need not be a death sentence but can offer a second chance at life.
Paula's journey is a powerful reminder of the strength found in embracing one's true self, even in the face of adversity. Her story continues to inspire others to overcome fear and to live authentically, proving that the courage to be oneself is a battle worth fighting.
