Rutger published: Trans Track Star Challenges Recent Sports Policy Changes: "My Biology is Fundamentally Different"

At just 21, Sadie Schreiner, an accomplished American track athlete and two-time NCAA All-American in 200-meter races, isn't just running on tracks—she's racing against controversial policies. Recently, Sadie has been speaking out about how new rules targeting transgender athletes have thrown a wrench in her athletic career and daily life.

Sadie's been pretty vocal about feeling "defeated" by these policy shifts, especially those from a past administration. She believes these rules unfairly single out transgender athletes, stopping them from competing in categories that match their gender identity.

Rising restrictions in sports

Transgender athletes, especially trans women, have seen a rise in restrictions over recent years. These policies claim they're about maintaining fairness in women's sports but have instead kept transgender women out from competing in female categories at various levels, from high school all through college and grassroots sports.

Studies have shown that if transgender women follow existing regulations, they don't have any significant competitive edge over cisgender women in elite sports. But despite this evidence, strict rules are still in place, leaving athletes like Sadie facing some tough choices.

What transgender athletes are up against

Sadie began her transition back in high school, starting hormone therapy, which not only helped her align with her gender identity but also changed her physical capabilities as an athlete. She notes, "The hormone therapy has shrunk my ligaments, made me shorter, weaker, and lessened my muscles. It's also redistributed my fat and lowered my lung capacity."

Even with these significant changes, Sadie has been benched from competing in NCAA events due because new restrictions got in her lane. Switching over events run by USA Track & Field has been "brutal," as she often finds herself running solo due simply because there aren't enough athletes in her age group.

To make matters worse, new policy shifts from USA Track & Field, which align with World Athletics' regulations, have further cut down on her chances. Sadie expresses her frustration, saying, "They silently changed their policy," worried that her racing opportunities here in America might be all but over.

Reflections and finding strength in family

The policies haven't just thrown a hurdle in Sadie's sports life; they've affected her personal life too. In a conversation with her doctor about hormone therapy during a tele-health call, she sheds light on what it's like navigating both health concerns and maintaining her competitive edge.

Her dad, Greg Schreiner, shares in her disappointment, saying, "It's sad. As a parent, you want your child's achievements on full display. Imagining Sadie's last race in this country just feels so bittersweet."

Sadie's story shines a spotlight on this ongoing debate around transgender athletes in sports. Even though these policies often claim fairness as their goal, her experiences shed light on how important it really might be might look at it from more angles and rethink these complex issues.

The conversation around inclusivity in sports isn't stopping here. Advocates are pushing hard, calling out policies that need a fair look at both gender identity and equality. Sadie's story shows just how much determination and grit transgender athletes bring as they continue chasing their dreams despite these big challenges.
