Des Moines, Iowa – Celebrating his 18th birthday in an extraordinary way, Kayde Martin stood at the Iowa State Capitol passionately urging lawmakers to safeguard the rights of transgender individuals. His emotional plea comes amidst legislative moves threatening to rescind civil rights protections for the transgender community in Iowa.
In his heartfelt address to the legislators, Martin expressed his concern: "It deeply troubles me that after 18 years of living here with my family, attending school, and working, this is the focus of our state." Martin, like many, fears the implications of Iowa's potential to become the first state to repeal such vital anti-discrimination protections.
Thousands of supporters joined Martin in protest against the proposed legislation. Despite their efforts, the bill passed, sparking a wave of concern and disappointment among LGBTQ+ advocates. The legislation aims to allow discrimination against transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals in areas such as housing, employment, and credit.
Republican lawmakers argue that the bill is intended to protect women and children, particularly in gender-segregated spaces and sports teams. However, studies and experts suggest that such measures are unnecessary and harm transgender individuals more than they protect others.
Kayde Martin, a young trans man, took a stand not only for himself but for countless others in the community. "Good morning, my name is Kayde Martin, and today I speak not just for myself, but for many other transgender youths in Iowa," he began. Reflecting on his personal journey, Martin shared his hopes for a future where he can live without fear of discrimination. "I plan on attending the University of Northern Iowa in the fall, and I hope to live independently and without fear of discrimination simply because of who I am," he said.
The teenager also questioned the selective defense of rights, noting, "I have heard some people talk about women’s rights… Why do women’s rights only seem to be defended when it is used to be against the transgender community? Where’s the same outcry when it comes to women’s choices in their own bodily autonomy?"
Raised in a Christian household, Martin spoke of the values of respect and love that his faith instilled in him. "A good Christian knows that only the lord is one to judge," he asserted. "Nobody knows the heavenly father’s plan." He emphasized his desire to live authentically, as the person he believes he was meant to be.
"I want to be able to be the person I was meant to be, and as the person that God knows me to be. Please, don’t take my rights away simply because you disagree with who I am," Martin urged the lawmakers. His speech was a poignant reminder of the personal and societal challenges faced by transgender individuals seeking acceptance and equality.
Despite widespread protests, the bill was fast-tracked by the Republican-majority legislature and supported largely along party lines. Governor Kim Reynolds defended the bill, stating, "It is common sense to acknowledge the obvious biological differences between men and women." Critics argue that the bill's true intent is to marginalize the transgender community further.
State Representative Aime Wichtendahl, Iowa’s only transgender legislator, voiced strong opposition, highlighting the harmful intentions behind the bill. "The purpose of Iowa’s bill is to ‘erase us from public life and to stigmatize our existence, to make our existence illegal, to force us back into the closet,’" Wichtendahl declared.
As the debate continues, Kayde Martin’s birthday speech stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of young trans individuals advocating for their rights. His courage and the solidarity shown by thousands of supporters underscore the ongoing battle for equality and justice in Iowa and beyond.
