Lia Thomas, a 2022 NCAA swimming champion, continues to be a prominent figure in discussions about transgender inclusion in sports, even three years after she last competed. While she has often avoided the public spotlight, only occasionally sharing her voice through brief statements, Thomas recently stepped back into public view.
Last Thursday night in Los Angeles, Lia Thomas was honored at the Violet Visionary Awards, receiving the prestigious "Voice of Inspiration" award. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to the mentors who have supported her throughout her collegiate swimming career.
"It makes me very emotional because I remember all too well not that long ago being 18 and just realizing that I’m trans," Lia shared. "Feeling so excited at the prospect of being able to be who I am, but feeling so terrified to take those steps because I didn’t know any other trans people."
Lia reflected on the challenging journey of coming out and embracing her identity, "Being open and out in myself felt like this impossible mountain climb, and I didn’t know if I had the strength to do it."
Her story and strength have been highlighted in recent media, including an extensive interview with WHYY Radio. This marked her first in-depth interview in three years, during which she shared insights into her experiences before and after her championship season in 2022, and addressed the controversies that arose during that time.
Now 26 years old and attending law school, Lia Thomas has faced significant challenges since graduating from college. Two major events particularly stand out: her attempt to challenge the World Aquatics ban on transgender women competing in women’s categories in 2024, and her role as a symbol in the broader conversation about transgender inclusion in sports.
The World Aquatics ban was a significant setback for Lia, as the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the case. "It was a gut punch and it still hits me sometimes. It’s just like that aching grief at not being able to do the sport that I love," she expressed.
As a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s swimming team, Thomas set a school record. However, earlier this year, under pressure from the U.S. Department of Education, the university decided to erase her records and awards. The administration threatened to withdraw federal funding if the school did not ban transgender women from women’s sports and erase their achievements.
Lia Thomas spoke out against such actions, emphasizing the inconsistency and discrimination they represent. "You don’t get to say, ‘You can be a woman in these situations, but not in these’ because you would never do that to a cis woman," Thomas argued. "For trans women, a lot of people think, ‘It’s OK that I can sort of be the arbiter and pick and choose when I see them as women’."
Despite the adversities she faces, Lia Thomas remains unwavering in her journey. "When I look back on my journey, on all the difficulties, all the highs and lows, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat," she stated passionately. "There’s just no substitute for living and being your authentic self. It unfortunately takes courage because of the many difficulties that there are surrounding being openly trans, especially being an openly trans athlete, but it’s absolutely worth it."
