Rutger published: Trans Movie "Emilia Pérez" Dominates BAFTA Longlist with Nods in 15 Categories

A Spanish-language film "Emilia Pérez" has taken the lead in the 2024 BAFTA longlist, garnering more nominations than any other film unveiled on January 3rd. This remarkable film about a transgender woman's journey is in the running in 15 out of the 25 categories, including best film, best director, best leading actress, and three nominations for supporting actress.

Following closely behind is the papal thriller "Conclave," which received 14 nods. However, it's "Emilia Pérez," a compelling musical, that has caught the spotlight. The film tells the story of Rita, a lawyer in Mexico City, portrayed by Zoe Saldaña. She is hired by a cartel leader, Manitas, played by Karla Sofia Gascón, to help her flee Mexico with her family and undergo gender-affirming surgery to live as a woman.

During this journey, Perez establishes an NGO dedicated to supporting the families of cartel victims, seeking redemption and finding love with Epifanía, played by Adriana Paz, a woman whose abusive husband's remains were discovered by the charity.

Selena Gomez joins the cast as Jessi, Manitas's wife, contributing to the rich tapestry of characters and emotional depth of this trans musical crime drama. The film's exploration of identity, redemption, and love provides a fresh perspective on the intersection of personal and societal challenges.

In an interview from November 2024, Karla Sofía Gascón, who is herself trans, shared her approach to portraying Emilia Pérez. "I immersed myself in the role to the point where it impacted my personal life. The lines between my identity and my character's began to blur," Gascón revealed, highlighting the dedication and authenticity she brought to the role.

Other LGBTQ+ Films in the Spotlight

Several other LGBTQ+ themed films have also made it onto the BAFTA longlist. Among them is "Love Lies Bleeding," a sapphic bodybuilding romance thriller, nominated for Outstanding British Film. Also on the list is "Will & Harper," a touching yet humorous documentary following a trans road trip, which is vying for a nomination in the documentary category.

Additionally, Daniel Craig has earned a spot on the Leading Actor longlist for his role in "Queer" by director Luca Guadagnino, further highlighting the diverse representation of LGBTQ+ stories in this year's film roster.

BAFTA Longlist Highlights

The BAFTA longlist includes a wide array of films across various categories. "Emilia Pérez" is a contender for Best Film, alongside other notable entries such as "Anora," "The Apprentice," "The Brutalist," and "Dune: Part Two." The Outstanding British Film category features "Love Lies Bleeding" among other distinct productions like "Blitz" and "Paddington in Peru."

In the category of Film Not in English Language, "Emilia Pérez" stands out as a powerful representation of diverse narratives. Its nomination, alongside films like "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "Flow," underscores the growing recognition and celebration of global stories.

The Documentary category sees a range of contenders, with "Will & Harper" joining films like "The Bibi Files" and "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story." These documentaries reflect a commitment to sharing unique and impactful narratives from around the world.

As the final nomination list will be announced on January 15th, anticipation builds for the BAFTA awards ceremony set for February 16th, hosted by actor and LGBTQ+ ally David Tennant. This year's ceremony promises to be a celebration of diverse talents and stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.

With such a diverse and inclusive lineup, the 2024 BAFTA longlist is a testament to the growing representation of LGBTQ+ narratives and the importance of visibility in mainstream media.
