Rutger published: Trans Man Faces Discrimination and Detention Despite Following Restroom Laws

There was a troubling event recently at a bar in South Carolina that really shines a light on what transgender folks deal with in public places. Luca Strobel, who's a transgender man, had a run-in with police after using a women's restroom, even though he was following what his legal ID says.

A night out turns tense at a Folly Beach bar

On May 16th, Luca, who was only 25, headed out with a friend, Caroline Frady, whose birthday was worth celebrating. He was supposed be her sober driver at Sand Dollar Social Club in Folly Beach. But when he checked out their men-only restroom, there were only urinals with no privacy and no lock on its door.

Given that awkward setup, he got a thumbs-up from a female staffer and went ahead and used a vacant women's restroom. But while he was in there minding his own business, a guy claiming ownership barged in, peeked over, and started shouting some nasty stuff, accusing Luca wrongly.

Things heat up and police get involved

The so-called owner didn't stop at words; he physically threw Luca out, spewing hurtful insults about his identity. Once outside, a cop was waiting, and despite Luca's calmness and sobriety, they slapped on charges like public intoxication. Both he and Caroline found themselves accused unfairly.

Luca later took his story online, on TikTok, where he shared how rough and unkindly he was treated by officers—handcuffs tightened until it hurt, slammed against a wall, called by wrong pronouns, and charged without investigating what kicked things off. They just told him and Caroline, “Take it up with a judge.”

Legal rights and pushing back

In South Carolina, there aren't any statewide restrictions against transgender folks using restrooms that fit their gender identity. His ID says “F,” which should have made using a women-only space completely legal thanks not only state but also federal laws like those from '64's Civil Rights Act and 14th Amendment's Equal Protection.

This whole mess really highlights what transgender individuals fear every day when faced with laws up in-the-air on acceptance or pushback. There are those calling stronger protection measures needed from government side along with everyday understanding towards preventing discrimination stories coming out over these incidents.

Support rallies around Luca

Afterwards, Luca set up a GoFundMe, hoping his move westward towards California could seek safer surroundings along with acceptance. Crowdfunding explained how urgent relocating felt since local atmosphere felt increasingly hostile minus supportive communities present nearby. So far he counts more than $5k raised out from needed 15k showing folks rally around cause.
