In a strong response to the Football Association’s (FA) recent policy change, trans footballers and allies are voicing their concerns about the ban on trans women participating in affiliated leagues.
Goal Diggers Football Club, a London-based club for womxn and non-binary individuals, recently organized a match titled “Let the Dolls Play” in support of trans footballers. The event took place on June 1st, coinciding with the first day of Pride Month and the implementation of the FA’s new policy.
The decision by the FA follows a ruling by the UK Supreme Court, which interpreted the definition of “sex” under the 2010 Equality Act to refer exclusively to biological women. This has led various organizations, including the FA, to realign their policies accordingly.
Previously, trans women were allowed to play in women’s football if they met certain medical criteria, such as maintaining testosterone levels below a specified threshold for a year, providing medical records of hormone therapy, and undergoing annual reviews. An FA official also needed to observe and approve their participation.
Billie Sky, a trans footballer with Goal Diggers FC, shared her personal story, expressing how football became a significant part of her journey after coming out. “I realized I was trans two decades ago, but only recently did I start playing football. It became my passion, and now it feels like it's been taken away,” Sky said.
Fleur Cousens, founder of Goal Diggers, spearheaded the club’s resistance against the ban. Wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Let the Dolls Play,” she emphasized the club’s commitment to inclusivity. “We refuse to accept this exclusionary policy. Our grassroots community stands strong in welcoming trans women to the game,” Cousens stated.
The FA’s new policy has had immediate emotional and practical effects on trans athletes. Sky lamented the limited opportunities to participate in official leagues, expressing concern about achieving her dream of playing for her favorite club.
The policy change has also sparked wider societal implications. “It’s disheartening to feel unwelcome in a sport that brings so much joy,” said trans footballer Paula Griffin, reflecting on her emotional response to the ban.
Instances of discrimination have already surfaced. Sky recounted a recent incident of verbal harassment, highlighting the real-world consequences of exclusionary policies.
Despite the challenges, the community remains resilient. Griffin emphasized her determination to continue playing out of love for the game, stating, “We are here to play, regardless of the barriers.”
While the FA has acknowledged the emotional toll of the policy and offered support through online therapy via the charity Sporting Chance, many see this as insufficient. Critics argue that the ban is exclusionary and detrimental to the mental health and well-being of trans athletes.
LGBTQ+ organizations have been vocal in their opposition, advocating for more inclusive practices that respect the identities and rights of all players.
As the community rallies for change, discussions continue about how to ensure sports remain a welcoming space for everyone. The call to action is clear: policies must evolve to embrace diversity and foster an environment where every player can thrive without fear of discrimination.
