Rutger published: Trans Drag Performer Stands Up to Harassment in NYC

In New York City, renowned drag performer Jasmine Kennedie, who gained fame during Season 14 of RuPaul's Drag Race, encountered a distressing episode of public harassment on a Sunday evening. The following day, she courageously shared her experience on Instagram, complete with video evidence of the ordeal.

After dazzling audiences with her performance at the Playhouse in the West Village, Kennedie, still in her stage makeup, was making her way home to New Jersey. While waiting for her train at the World Trade Center, she noticed a man who sat "very, very close" to her.

Feeling uncomfortable, Kennedie moved away, but the man, who appeared to be in his 30s and was physically imposing, began to follow her. He hurled derogatory language at her, using slurs and declaring, "This is Trump's America" and "Trump's your daddy, Trump is your f***in' daddy."

Faced with this aggression, Kennedie decided to take a stand. "I just matched his energy, essentially," she later recounted in an interview. She documented the confrontation on her social media, where she bravely addressed her harasser directly.

Standing Up for Herself

"Yes, I am a trans woman. Do you have a problem with that?" she asked boldly. When the man responded with a crass remark, Kennedie shot back, "Yes, and it's probably bigger than yours," confidently asserting herself.

In her message to her followers, Kennedie emphasized the importance of understanding the distinction between gender and sex. "Trans women know they were born biologically as men. We aren't denying that. But our gender is different than our sex at birth," she explained.

"People have such a hard time grasping that gender and sex are two different things. But in Trump's America, they don't want to listen to facts. They don't want to hear the true experiences of human beings," she continued, shedding light on the stubborn misconceptions and prejudice faced by the trans community.

Kennedie's powerful words resonate with the reality that trans people have existed throughout history. "Transness isn't new," she asserted, challenging the idea that transgender identities are a modern phenomenon.

Community Support and Justice

The incident quickly garnered attention, with Kennedie receiving an outpouring of support from her followers and the broader community. Many recognized her harasser as an employee at a popular gym in Manhattan, with some even conducting their own detective work to confirm his identity.

The following day, in a significant turn of events, the individual was reportedly fired from his job, highlighting the power of community solidarity in holding individuals accountable for their actions.

Kennedie expressed gratitude for those who supported her during the confrontation, and she extended her message of resilience to all trans individuals. "Do not let them stoke fear in you," she urged her trans "brothers and sisters," encouraging them to stand firm in the face of adversity.

"This is a PSA," she declared. "This is a warning to people. This is Trump's America."

Through her bravery and strength, Jasmine Kennedie not only stood up for herself but also for the entire trans community, challenging hatred and advocating for the dignity and rights of all transgender people.
