Rutger published: Trans Detainees Report Abuses and Forced Labor at ICE Facility

Disturbing abuse claims at Louisiana ICE detention center Reports are coming out about a Louisiana detention center run by ICE, and they're anything but good. Four people, including three transgender men, have come forward with serious allegations. They're accusing a former assistant warden there not just about forced labor, but also sexual assault, physical abuse, and being denied basic healthcare. These claims aren't new; they span several years and have been officially documented by groups like Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, ACLU, and National Immigration Project. The abuse reportedly involved several detainees, such as Monica Renteria-Gonzalez, Kenia Campos-Flores, and Mario Garcia-Valenzuela, and happened over a two-year period.

Forced labor and relentless harassment Monica Renteria-Gonzalez has painted a bleak picture with her account. She described constant harassment at every turn in that place. "Wherever I was—the yard, even in line at dinner—he was there, making my skin crawl," she said. The detainees detailed being pressed hard, coerced even, in a labor program. Imagine having no choice but moving heavy cinder blocks and metal cabinets without fair pay or even proper gear—just snacks and sodas as compensation. Monica recalls it as a harrowing experience. Their complaints about this treatment were shrugged off with degrading retorts like, "If you wanna be a man, I'll treat you like one." Such remarks left them feeling powerless, trapped in a cycle they couldn't escape.

Facing retaliation just by speaking up Trying even slightly voicing their concerns seemed only make things worse. Garcia-Valenzuela reported solitary confinement and even handcuffs after speaking out. Despite numerous grievances, their cries were dismissed as "baseless" by administration. Sarah Decker, a lawyer with RFK Human Rights, pointed out how specifically transgender men and masculine-presenting LGBTQ+ individuals were targeted in these abuses.

Government's indifferent response These allegations were filed under a law allowing lawsuits against federal misconduct—the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). But, how did Homeland Security respond? With skepticism. Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS official, outright dismissed them as "hoaxes" and "smears," sidestepping any direct reference or addressing those incidents brought up by detainees. According McLaughlin, "nobody was forced" and there was zero abuse or denial. But folks like Renteria-Gonzalez aren't backing down from their accusations, still voicing their frustration and fear.

Supporters persist in seeking justice Groups like RFK Human Rights haven't stopped fighting—they're watching ICE centers in Louisiana like hawks. They argue that both ICE and its private contractors knew about these abuses and just turned a blind eye. Monica summed it up: "It was tough. Scared, mad, hopeless—because in here, we have no voice." These feelings resonate with many detainees who hope that more attention will compel some accountability and make life safer, especially LGBTQ+ folks.
