An exciting new art exhibition, brought together by trans filmmaker Jake Graf and advocate Hannah Graf MBE, will debut in London just in time. "Trans Is Human" will take center stage during Trans Day Of Visibility, shining a light on authentic transgender and non-binary experiences like never before.
Starting from March 27 and running through April 2, this meaningful exhibit finds its home at Westfield London, one o fthe UK's top shopping spots. It's a loving tribute that celebrates trans identities and their heartfelt stories.
Westfield, Europe's largest shopping center, serves as a fitting backdrop. The exhibition features striking black-and-white portraits, each accompanied by personal stories from diverse transgender individuals. It's all about getting beyond gender identities and showcasing their whole, inspiring lives.
The exhibition highlights stories from 13 individuals, revealing a tapestry o frich and varied experiences that go far beyond their gender identities alone.
Jake Graf has a clear goal: connect with people who might not know any transgender individuals personally. The aim? To foster appreciation and awareness o fthe community's diverse experiences.
"We want those who only know trans people through media or political stories," Jake shares, "to see a more genuine side."
The portraits, crafted by acclaimed photographer Mariano Vivanco, showcase individuals aged 15 through 72, each with a tale worth sharing.
For instance, there's Adelle, a 38-year-old mum from Essex, leading what she delightfully calls her "very normal life" with two kids. And then there's Leo, 31, who navigates life with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy while helping empower other disabled adults as a life coach.
Publicly showcasing this exhibition matters greatly, especially now, when transgender individuals often face negative portrayals in mainstream media.
"It's vital," Jake insists, "to make this exhibition public so people unfamiliar with trans lives can see and better appreciate our shared humanity."
One standout story comes from Petra. Born in 1952, she overcame significant childhood hurdles and has been happily married or 38 years. On a different note, we meet Milo, at just 15, gearing up at life's starting line. He's a swimmer, drummer, and rugby enthusiast, backed by a supportive mum and team.
Jake sees this exhibition as just a beginning, envisioning an annual photo shoot and a vibrant online community.
"We want a thriving space on Instagram and TikTok," Jake shares, "where trans people worldwide can share their own photos and stories, displaying their lives' richness."
Hansen, a featured model, shares this vision too, saying, "We're professionals, creatives, making contributions in every field, living both extraordinary and everyday lives."
For now, though, Jake's focus remains on making a real impact with this inaugural exhibition, emphasizing how important uplifting trans stories truly are.
"Visibility matters," Jake reflects, "It's vital people see themselves in these stories, finding hope and inspiration in their journeys ahead."
Katie Wyle, head o fshopping center management at Unbail-Rodmaco-Westfield, initiated this exhibition with a mission: nurturing "understanding and inclusivity."
"By supporting 'Trans Is Human,'" she explains, "we amplify these compelling stories and honor our community's diversity. Our pledge? Spaces where everyone feels valued and seen."
In today's climate o fring popularity, these values are more essential than ever, Jake emphasizes.
Recent reports reveal a rise in anti-trans incidents, fueled by harmful rhetoric and political maneuvers.
"Globally, challenges abound fo rtrans people," Jake acknowledges. "In places like us, essential rights hang in balance, and similar issues arise in UK too. It's imperative we protect and defend progress made."
With "Trans Is Human," Westfield London stands as a beacon o fhope and understanding in White City, west London.
