Trans Couple Jake and Hannah Graf Advocate for Children's Cancer Charity Amidst Concerns for Safety

Raising Awareness for Children With Cancer UK

Jake and Hannah Graf, renowned as the UK's prominent transgender couple, are set to champion awareness for "Children With Cancer UK" (CWC). The couple aim to highlight the invaluable work of the charity while also voicing personal concerns regarding safety in light of recent legal judgments.

As ambassadors for CWC, Jake and Hannah, alongside their two children, Millie and Teddie, will participate in the Vitality Westminster Mile on September 27. Their goal is to draw attention to the challenges faced by children battling cancer.

Jake, speaking to media outlets, shared his apprehensions as a parent and detailed his family's personal battles with cancer. He expressed, "Our biggest fear is our children getting ill. I've lost my father to cancer, and several family members have faced it."

He continued, "I truly can't envision anything more devastating than a child receiving a cancer diagnosis. The work CWC does is absolutely crucial, yet it lacks the visibility it deserves. That's why we chose to support the Westminster Mile in its name."

In a heartfelt message to families supporting their children through cancer, Jake offered words of encouragement: "You are heroes. Stay strong; a vast community stands ready to support you."

Safety Concerns Amid Legal Developments

Amidst their charitable efforts, the couple is grappling with concerns for their safety following a UK Supreme Court ruling. The court decided that, under the 2010 Equality Act, the legal definition of a woman pertains only to biological women.

This ruling prompted fears for the Grafs' safety. Jake described the emotional turmoil, stating, "We had a summer filled with anxiety, worry, and uncertainty about what lies ahead."

The ruling has influenced guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) regarding access to single-sex spaces, which could potentially exclude trans individuals from facilities aligned with their gender identity.

Despite assurances of legal accuracy from EHRC, many UK businesses argue that excluding trans people from gendered facilities could be impractical and financially burdensome.

Jake warned, "Businesses might be compelled to adopt exclusionary measures, essentially segregating trans employees and customers." He criticized the situation as a legislative stain on the government, suggesting it treats trans individuals as "second-class citizens."

A Difficult Time for the Trans Community

The Grafs' concerns are underscored by the UK's declining rank in ILGA-Europe's annual LGBTQ+ rights assessment, where the nation has fallen to 22nd place. Once a leader, the UK is now among the least favorable in Western Europe for LGBTQ+ laws.

"It's profoundly sad, and I fear for my wife's and children’s safety," Jake revealed. In what he describes as a "scary" national climate, he acknowledged the efforts of allies yet stressed the gravity of the challenges ahead for the trans community.

Jake encouraged viewers to watch the documentary "Kids Like Us," which depicts the experiences of children after a cancer diagnosis. The documentary, narrated by children, aims to shed light on these profound challenges.

In their role as CWC ambassadors, the Grafs will also attend the charity's gala on November 8 and participate in the Big Xmas Quiz as team captains.
