On Bluesky, a social media platform that's been buzzing as a Twitter rival, transgender users are raising alarms over having their accounts suspended, particularly when they're voicing criticism against JK Rowling, whose controversial views on gender are well-known.
This month, Jessie Earl, a prominent transgender director and writer who goes by Jessie Gender online, found herself locked out from Bluesky. Her 24-hour suspension was triggered after she commented on another trans user's post, simply saying, "I also wish ill on JK Rowling."
The original post that Jessie commented on was by trans author Gretchen Felker-Martic. Gretchen's post did contain aggressive language against Rowling, which went against Bluesky's strict rules on promoting violence or harm.
Although Jessie's comment didn't use direct violent language, her suspension was justified by Bluesky as “wishing ill on JK Rowling.” Jessie argued, "My words were mild—especially when you think about Rowling's rhetoric about trans people. 'Wishing ill' can mean anything, like hoping she forever gets lukewarm coffee."
Right after Jessie's suspension, non-binary author Dani Finn faced similar repercussions. Finn had used that same loaded phrase. According Finn, 'wishing ill' could be as harmless as saying, "I hope your TV show gets canceled due its role in global transphobic policy."
Finn's goal was clear: they wanted a closer look at Bluesky's moderation strategy. Finn remarked, "If 'wishing ill' counts as harmful, then honestly, we're at a point where criticism can be stifled at will."
Finn further mused, "If being critical about public figures isn't allowed, then maybe it's time we rethink what freedom on these platforms really means."
By August 2025, Bluesky had attracted about 38 million users. Yet, these recent suspensions have stirred anxiety among trans users, worried about facing penalties just because they're critical about JK Rowling's gender-critical stance.
In defiance, many users have taken a stand, also publicly posting that they “wish ill” on Rowling. It's a clear pushback against what they see as censorship on discussions that don't toe a conventional line."
Amidst all this, Bluesky commented that action against Felker-Martic was necessary due their explicit remark about harming another person, which clearly violated policies on threats.
But when it comes down Jessie's and Finn's cases, Bluesky's response seemed a bit murky, saying, "Still looking at other user accounts, but it's correct that Gretchen's account violated policy."
Oddly, Finn's content was eventually reinstated, but Jessie's post wasn't.
Bluesky gained a lot traction as folks sought a Twitter alternative, especially post-Elon Musk and Trump's re-election. But now, it's facing a tough task: protecting users from harmful content while allowing open criticism, especially when public figures are involved.
As this situation unfolds, many in LGBTQ+ community, along with their supporters, are closely observing how Bluesky addresses these concerns. The ongoing debate sheds light on need platforms that encourage open expression while keeping things respectful and secure.
This whole moderation dialogue highlights one pressing issue in today's online space, and there are hopes Bluesky will tweak its rules so diverse voices feel welcomed and included.
We've reached out Bluesky seeking further comments clarification on its policies.
