In a lively backyard in central Florida, an unconventional wrestling match is drawing an enthusiastic crowd. Instead of alligators, the spectacle features trans participants engaging in lube wrestling in an inflatable pool. Surrounded by friends adorned in neon fringes and golden lamé bodysuits, the atmosphere is one of high-spirited celebration, reminiscent of the flamboyant pro wrestling of yesteryear. The event, complete with cotton candy and drag performances, is filled with laughter and camaraderie.
The hosts of this vibrant summer event, aptly named "Lubor Day," are the Swamp Bois, a transmasculine collective in the Tampa Bay area. Alongside the transfeminine group, Doll Dynasty, they are carving out transformative spaces for the trans community in Florida, a state often seen as politically challenging for trans people.
Swamp Bois and Doll Dynasty operate on the belief that joy, play, and social connections are integral to mutual aid and community care. "Let the haters hate," says J, a pseudonymous organizer with Swamp Bois. "We wrestle alligators and survive."
Florida ranks among the top states with the highest transgender population, underscoring the need for community and collaboration. Swamp Bois, inspired by successful mutual aid initiatives across the country, began their journey in early 2025, starting with a meetup that included a themed cake featuring an alligator and a trans flag. They prioritize creating a safe, inclusive environment, demonstrated by their community manual and open town hall discussions.
Swamp Bois and Doll Dynasty frequently collaborate, with a strong focus on healthcare access. This month, they aim to award scholarships to assist with gender-affirming surgeries, a venture supported by mutual fundraising efforts. "It’s a beautiful, evolving process," J notes.
Unity Jalal, founder of Doll Dynasty, describes her initial experiences in the Tampa Bay queer scene, often feeling isolated as one of few trans women present. Legislative challenges, such as the 2023 Florida law restricting gender-affirming care, exacerbated these feelings. However, rather than leaving the state, Jalal chose to establish a supportive space for trans women.
Jalal’s vision led to Doll Dynasty’s inaugural event, exclusively for trans women and transfeminine individuals, encouraging attendees to dress up and connect. "We were the center," Jalal recalls. "It was special to be surrounded by people like me."
By integrating joy and play into mutual aid, these collectives strive to provide empowerment alongside community. "Play allows people to engage with their inner child," J explains. Events like Lubor Day foster social connections vital for combating isolation and exploring identity.
Jalal emphasizes the importance of these interactions: "Without social connections, there is no mutual aid. It’s not charity; it’s family."
Combining aid and joy, Swamp Bois and Doll Dynasty organize events such as clothing swaps and nature walks. Fundraisers like the Swamp Bois 2026 calendar support their surgery fund, capturing the community’s creativity and spirit.
Lubor Day, raising over $1,400 for surgery funds, showcased the full spectrum of emotions. "Seeing people freely express themselves was a gift of reclamation and joy," J reflects.
Following Lubor Day, a Halloween collaboration attracted many trans Floridians. The event, featuring costumes and performances, provided a safe space for people to express themselves and raised $1,000 for gender-affirming care.
Swamp Bois and Doll Dynasty draw inspiration from queer and trans pioneers, focusing on continued growth and collaboration. Their online community connects members across Florida and the South, emphasizing the importance of supportive networks.
Jalal encourages trans individuals to seek out community despite political challenges. "Go outside," she advises. "It’s essential to connect with each other."
As they look toward 2026 and beyond, these collectives plan to expand their initiatives, fostering connection and empowerment for trans individuals in Florida and beyond. Their success challenges narratives of adversity, highlighting resilience and joy within the trans community.
