Rising Above: Cody Smith's Journey in Track and Field

As a dedicated student of mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in New York, Cody Smith possesses a deep interest in robotics. This passion for precision and improvement extends beyond academics, as Cody applies the same principles to his role on the men’s track team. His journey, however, is unique—not just because of his academic prowess, but also because of his experiences as a transgender athlete.

During his senior year, Cody, a sprinter on the team, draws parallels between the mechanics of running and the intricacies of engineering. "We would often break down the fundamentals of sprinting," Cody explains. "It’s about perfecting your form, understanding aerodynamics, and ensuring your body reacts optimally, much like fine-tuning a machine."

With the outdoor season underway, Cody is aiming for the Liberty League championship in the 100 meters. If achieved, it would be a groundbreaking moment for RPI, marking the first time a transgender student-athlete has reached such a level in the school's history. This goal caps off a journey filled with resilience, growth, and the pursuit of excellence.

Before transitioning to the men’s team, Cody was a vital member of RPI’s women’s track team for two years. He contributed to a school-record-setting 4×100 relay team during his sophomore year, all while navigating his own journey of gender identity and self-discovery.

It was during the summer courses before his junior year that Cody made a pivotal decision. "I realized I needed to be true to myself," he recalls. "Presenting and being perceived as male felt right for me." Supported by a compassionate physician at RPI, Cody began hormone replacement therapy, a decision met with mixed reactions from his family.

"My parents struggled with my choice," Cody admits. "They implied financial and emotional support would cease if I continued with HRT. It was a challenging moment, but I was determined to follow my path." Despite personal hurdles, Cody found solidarity in his teammates, who rallied around him through the transition, in accordance with NCAA regulations.

In his transformative journey, Cody found inspiration in fellow trans athlete Sadie Schreiner from the Rochester Institute of Technology. "Watching her push boundaries despite facing adversity was empowering," Cody says. "Her resilience in the face of transphobia encouraged me to advocate for myself and other trans athletes."

Cody's advocacy extends to challenging stereotypes around trans men in sports. "There’s a misconception that trans men are just confused women athletes," he notes. "I’ve competed successfully against cisgender male athletes, proving that trans athletes can excel in men’s sports."

With a strong indoor season behind him and a promising start to the outdoor season, Cody is optimistic about reaching the qualifying time of 11.60 seconds for the championship. "I’ve been involved in track for a decade and I’m not ready to stop," he expresses. "My team has supported me unconditionally, and I want to contribute to our success."

Cody's journey is not just about personal achievement but also about paving the way for future generations of trans athletes. As he works towards his goal, he reflects on the importance of visibility and representation in sports. "I hope my story encourages others to be true to themselves," Cody shares. "Achieving my goal would mean the world, not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me along the way."

With the Liberty League championship on the horizon, Cody Smith remains focused and driven, embodying the spirit of perseverance and courage both on and off the track. His story is a testament to the power of authenticity and the unwavering pursuit of one’s dreams.
