In a landmark achievement, 17-year-old Verónica Garcia secured her place in history as the first transgender track and field state champion in Washington. Her victory in the 400-meter event marks her as a two-time champion, following her initial triumph in 2024. This year, Garcia improved her performance, completing the race in an impressive 55.70 seconds.
Despite her extraordinary accomplishment, Garcia faced boos from the audience while stepping onto the podium to accept her medal. This public reaction mirrored the reception she received the previous year.
As Garcia prepared for the race, athletes from a competing school donned black T-shirts with the slogan "Keep Women’s Sports Female." Additionally, a man sporting an American flag shirt emblazoned with the words "Save women’s sports" shouted phrases like "Let’s go, girls!" and "Girls’ race!" in an attempt to unsettle her.
Garcia, however, was unfazed by these attempts at intimidation. "I’ll be honest, I kind of expect it," she shared in an interview, "But maybe it didn’t have their intended effect. It made me angry, but not angry as in, I wanted to give up, but angry as in, I’m going to push." Her determination paid off as she finished nearly a second ahead of her closest competitor.
The contentious atmosphere extended to the awards ceremony, where her opponent held up a sign declaring herself the "real" winner. Despite the controversy, Garcia remained focused on her achievements. "I’m really proud of myself," she stated. "I did what I came to do, and that’s good enough for me."
In response to those who attempted to diminish her accomplishments, Garcia had a straightforward message: "I’m going to put this in the most PG-13 way. I’m just going to say it’s a damn shame they don’t have anything else better to do. I hope they get a life. But oh well. It just shows who they are as people."
Washington State has a long-standing policy, established in 2007, that allows transgender student-athletes to compete according to their gender identity. This groundbreaking law was the first of its kind in the United States.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association estimates that there are between five to ten transgender student-athletes among the state’s 250,000. However, the participation of trans athletes in school sports has become a contentious issue at the national level.
In February, a federal executive order aimed at "Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports" was issued, leading to investigations into school districts and state athletic associations that allow inclusive policies. The threat of withholding federal funds has put pressure on states like Washington, which support the rights of transgender student-athletes.
One such investigation targeted the Tumwater School District over its decision to allow a transgender athlete to participate in a basketball game. Political leaders opposing trans inclusion argue that it is "totally demeaning to women and girls."
Despite the political challenges, Garcia’s focus remains on promoting respect and kindness. Following her first victory in the 400 meters last year, she advocated for dignity and respect for all athletes. "At the very least, give us respect," she urged. "Even if you don’t understand why we’re transgender, the very least is to be nice to us. Kindness goes a long way."
As Garcia continues to break barriers on the track, her story serves as a beacon of perseverance and resilience for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Her achievements highlight the importance of inclusion and the ongoing struggle for equality in sports.
