Jake Barreau's journey as a volleyball coach is not just about athletic achievements but also a profound narrative of personal authenticity. As a freshman volleyball player at the University of Wisconsin, Barreau took the courageous step to come out as gay to his family. Though this initial step was significant, it took a few more years for him to openly share his identity with his teams and the broader public.
Fast forward ten years, Barreau is now not only secure in his identity but also celebrates a seven-year marriage. His commitment to his true self has naturally evolved into advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. Barreau's most recent professional move is joining the University of Alabama women’s volleyball team as an assistant coach, a role that he eagerly anticipates.
Barreau expressed his excitement about his new position at Alabama with enthusiasm and optimism. "I am beyond excited to join the University of Alabama family," he stated in a press release. He is inspired by the tradition and reputation of Alabama athletics and looks forward to contributing to the program's growth and success under the leadership of coach Rashinda Reed. As a seasoned recruiter, Barreau is passionate about advocating for the program to recruits and their families, eager to promote the welcoming environment he has found at the university.
Prior to his current role, Barreau honed his skills over three years at Michigan State, where he excelled in recruitment. His impressive resume also includes a tenure as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Illinois State, where he helped lead the team to four NCAA tournaments. Barreau’s coaching journey also took him to the University of Oklahoma and Missouri State, experiences that enriched his professional and personal life.
At the University of Oklahoma, Barreau shared his coming out story in 2019, highlighting the support he received despite the conservative backdrop of Oklahoma and Missouri. "While at Missouri State, my student-athletes and head coach helped in filming a video for a marriage proposal that my future husband surprised me with," Barreau recalled, emphasizing the love and acceptance he found there.
Barreau’s marriage to Hunter Bishop, a fellow volleyball player and coach, is a cornerstone of his life. "Just kids fallin’ in love. 7 years married to my absolute best friend. Love ya, bud!" Barreau posted on Instagram, celebrating their relationship. Now, as they relocate to Tuscaloosa with their four dogs and one cat, they embrace a new chapter together.
Barreau’s dedication to LGBTQ+ advocacy remains steadfast, even as he transitions from liberal Michigan to more conservative Alabama. "Nothing will change on my end as far as advocacy," Barreau affirmed, highlighting his commitment to being open and proud wherever he is. His partner, Hunter, also shares this commitment, and they both look forward to finding and building their community in Alabama, much as they have done in previous places.
The couple’s meeting with Alabama's athletic director, Greg Byrne, reassured them of the welcoming environment they were entering. "No question this is a conservative place, by and large, and it’s similar to Oklahoma in that way when we lived there. However, nothing changes on our end. We are open and proud and will always find our community. We already have," Barreau stated confidently.
Through his coaching career and personal journey, Jake Barreau exemplifies the power of living authentically and advocating for inclusion in sports. As he embarks on this new chapter at Alabama, he continues to inspire others with his story of courage, love, and unwavering dedication to equality.
