Tommy Purr: Wrestling trailblazer faces a new challenge

Tommy Purr, a notable figure in professional wrestling and a beacon championing LGBTQ+ inclusion, recently shared some tough news—he's been diagnosed with cancer. For years, Tommy's been leaving an indelible mark on wrestling, and this diagnosis comes as a blow not just personally, but also within his community. On May 27, Tommy took a moment on Facebook, laying bare his battle with cancer. His brother, Jordan Rogers, quickly sprang up with a GoFundMe campaign, aiming at rallying support as Tommy embarks on his treatment journey. As a veteran in wrestling with a 14-year career, Tommy's influence and contribution are felt deeply.

The start on a tough road

Tommy's health issues surfaced earlier this year. Back in January 2025, he visited a doctor about an abscess, but it wasn't until May that he was hit with a diagnosis—colorectal cancer. Alarmingly, his surgeon had suspected cancer months before but dropped an unfortunate ball by not relaying this. This oversight cost Tommy precious treatment time. Jordan shared, "Initially, they mentioned Crohn's, not cancer. We've missed four key months, and now there's concern that it might have spread." By June 4, confirmation came that Tommy's fears were justified. "The MRI showed it has spread," Tommy said. Yet, he clings bravely onto optimism. "Luckily, it's still small. Once we start chemo, I've got a shot at beating this," he added with hope.

Trailblazing In and Out Of The Ring

Tommy's impact on wrestling extends far beyond just his moves in a ring. As a trailblazer paving paths and breaking barriers, especially as an openly LGBTQ+ individual, he's championed diversity and representation in professional wrestling. His stellar career sparkled across many states, most notably in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, with a special focus on promoting queer wrestlers. His work with Las Vegas events and promotions like PrideStyle Pro and Big Valley Wrestling has solidified him as a cherished personality. Now facing a monumental battle, Tommy's indomitable spirit continues shining bright. As he cheekily posted on Instagram, "Cancer's a tough opponent, but not tougher than me."

Overflowing community support

Since Tommy's diagnosis, love and support from both wrestling and theater circles in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City have been overwhelming. His brother's GoFundMe push not only smashed its $10,000 target but also showcased just how dearly Tommy's held. Furthermore, The Lucha Project in Utah has stepped up, scheduling a benefit show on July 5, aimed at rallying further support and awareness.

The fight goes on, inspiring many

While taking a step back from wrestling matches, Tommy's devotion never wanes. He's still set on being part at Big Valley Wrestling's "Loud & Proud 5" event, symbolizing his enduring connection with wrestling and its enthusiasts. Tommy's courage, even as he faces personal adversity, stands as an inspiration. It underscores why representation and community support within LGBTQ+ circles are vital. The wrestling community, along with friends and fans alike, are sending waves upon waves well-wishes, hoping alongside Tommy, eager and ready, as he tackles his health battle head on. As Tommy Purr steps onto this daunting path, his legacy shines brighter than ever before. His bravery and tenacity prove he's every bit a champion, and with a community backing him, anticipation grows as we await his triumphant return.
