In a tragic turn of events, Steven Grygelko, who was celebrated in the drag community under the stage name Heklina, was discovered deceased in a residential area of Soho, London. The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into her unexpected death, seeking to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. This heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through both the local and international LGBTQ+ communities.
Heklina was a prominent figure not only in the London drag scene but also in the United States, where she initially rose to fame. Her friend and fellow performer, Joshua Grannell, known to audiences as Peaches Christ, made the tragic discovery on April 3, 2023. Despite immediate efforts, paramedics pronounced Heklina dead at the scene. Her passing at the age of 54 has left a void in the hearts of fans and friends alike.
The Metropolitan Police have been diligently working to unravel the events leading up to Grygelko's passing. Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis, from the Central West Command Unit, is spearheading the investigation. He has confirmed that three men were captured on CCTV footage visiting Heklina's flat in the early hours of the day she was found. These men are now being sought by the police to help piece together the timeline of events.
The authorities have released images of the men and are urging them, or anyone with knowledge of their identities, to come forward. The goal is to ascertain what transpired during their visit and to address the many unanswered questions that linger about Heklina's final moments.
DCI Purvis expressed his condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with Steven’s family and friends who still have a lot of unanswered questions about what happened to him. We need to establish what happened, and how Steven was when they left."
Joshua Grannell shared his grief publicly, writing a heartfelt message on social media. He recounted the shock and devastation upon finding his dear friend unresponsive. In his post, Grannell expressed, "I am shocked and horrified to bring this news to you. I am living in a real-life nightmare so forgive me if I don’t have all the answers just now. This morning, in London, England I went to collect my dear friend Heklina, who is co-starring with me in a Mommie Queerest show here, and found her dead."
He continued to highlight Heklina's significance to the community, saying, "I do not know the cause of death yet. I know this is shocking news and I am beyond stunned, but I wanted to let folks know what has happened. Heklina is not just my best friend, but a beloved icon of our community."
Heklina was in London to perform in the show "Mommie Queerest," a parody of the classic film "Mommie Dearest." The production was scheduled for a two-week run at Soho Theatre, promising audiences a unique experience through the lens of drag culture. Sadly, her untimely death has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous celebration of art and creativity.
