Rutger published: Tragic Loss: Gay Man's Life Taken in Holiday Tragedy

On Christmas Eve, a tragic event shook up a Bronx community, as Arkmayer Davis, a 36-year-old gay man, was senselessly killed. This heartbreaking incident, sparked by an altercation filled with anti-gay slurs, has stirred deep anger and grief among those who knew him. Even though Kayjon Yizar was arrested, many are left wondering why hate crime charges haven't been added. It makes you question how committed our justice system reallyis in safeguarding marginalized people.

How it all happened

Arkmayer and his husband, Daris, were navigating life in a homeless shelter after a fire destroyed their apartment on December 2, taking not just their home but most everything they owned. Tragically, they found themselves sharing that shelter with Yizar, who, like them, had lost his home in that same fire.

According Daris, Yizar had a history filled with confrontation, often hurling derogatory slurs theirway. He wrongly blamed themfor that fire, a baseless notion that only intensified tensions between them.

"I'm convinced it's aboutthe fire," Daris said, suggesting Yizar's hostility stemmed from some twisted belief they were at fault. "He didn't mean tohurt Arkmayer;his anger was aimed at me. He just kept mixing usup."

Daris also recounted a chilling episode from July, when Yizar threatened them with violence, screaming from awindow, "Get away from my window before I put a .22 slugger inyour a**, you f**king fa***t," and then, "I'm tiredof y'all fa***ts." It's horrifying how deep hatred and prejudice can burn.

The heartache and fightfor justice

The last time Daris talked with Arkmayer was at a laundromata short while before he was killed. When Daris returned totheir room, he found Arkmayer unconscious, bleeding from stab wounds. Despite desperate efforts toh elphim, Arkmayer didn't make it, leaving Daris shattered.

"I tried shaking him, waking him, but he wasn't responding," Daris shared, voice heavy with heartbreak. "He just lay there, died right on that floor."

Arkmayer was rushed tothe hospital, but it was too late. The community's mourningthe loss ofs omeone his mother, Gertrude Davis, called "aloving, caring man" who "never hurt anyone." Outside court, she urged, "Hold on toyour kids; there are monsters out there."

Fueled by a needfor justice, Daris helped police identify Yizar from surveillance tapes. Yizar faces charges like second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Yet, many are frustrated bythe absenceof any hate crime charges.

"I'm relieved he'll face justice," Daris noted, stressing how severehis punishment should be. "He deserves nothing less thanlife in prison without parole. He shouldn't ever see daylight again."

The LGBTQ+ community has rallied around Daris, honoring Arkmayer's memory, and pressing harderfor hate crime charges. Staying informed and connected via community newsletters can help tackle such pressing issues collectively.

The loss Arkmayer suffered underscores how far society still needsto go against hate andviolence. With hope, this case could drive greater awareness and pushfor stronger protection formarginalized groups.
