Heartbreak in the Bronx: Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Member

In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves throughout the Bronx and beyond, a 36-year-old gay man lost his life on Christmas Eve in a brutal stabbing. The attack, characterized by anti-gay slurs and threats, has left the LGBTQ+ community in mourning and calling for justice.

The victim, Arkmayer Davis, was a cherished member of the community, known for his warmth and kindness. His husband, Daris Davis, is left grappling with the unimaginable loss. "He took my heart away," Daris shared, reflecting the profound grief felt by those who knew and loved Arkmayer.

The couple was residing in a homeless shelter following a devastating fire on December 2 that destroyed their apartment and most of their belongings. Unfortunately, the shelter was also home to Kayjon Yizar, the alleged attacker, who had lost his apartment in the same fire.

Background and Circumstances Surrounding the Attack

Daris Davis recounted that Yizar harbored a grudge, unjustly blaming them for the fire that had left him homeless. Previous encounters with Yizar were marked by hostility and homophobic threats. "He used to shout slurs at us," Daris recalled, describing a particularly terrifying incident from July where Yizar threatened their lives.

On the fateful night of Christmas Eve, tragedy struck. Arkmayer was attacked in the room he shared with Daris at the shelter. He sustained multiple stab wounds to the arm, leg, and torso. Despite being rushed to the hospital, his injuries proved fatal.

Daris Davis was the one who discovered Arkmayer, and the memory of that moment haunts him. "I came up to him, I shook him. I tried to wake him up, but he wasn't moving," Daris recounted tearfully. "He bled out and died on the floor right there."

Community Calls for Justice

The suspect, Yizar, has been apprehended and remains in custody. Surveillance footage from the shelter aided the police in identifying him as the alleged perpetrator. Although a suspect is in custody, the charges do not currently include hate crime allegations, a decision that has sparked outrage and calls for reconsideration.

"I'm glad that he's gonna get served the justice that he rightfully deserves," Daris expressed. However, he feels strongly that the punishment should reflect the severity of the crime. "He should never have a chance to see daylight again," Daris stated, advocating for a life sentence without parole.

Arkmayer's family, including his mother, Gertrude Davis, are also speaking out. Holding a picture of her son, Gertrude described him as "a loving, caring man" who had done no harm to anyone. Her plea to other parents is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable dangers in the world: "Hold on to your kids. There are monsters out here."

Remembering Arkmayer and Supporting the Community

As the community rallies around Daris and the family of Arkmayer, there is a renewed call for solidarity and support. Activists and community leaders emphasize the importance of addressing hate crimes and ensuring that justice is served.

Efforts to provide support and resources to the affected family are underway. The tragic loss of Arkmayer Davis highlights the ongoing need for safe spaces and strong community support networks for LGBTQ+ individuals.

In these trying times, the community is encouraged to stay connected and informed. Subscribing to newsletters and participating in local events can help members stay engaged and proactive in addressing issues that impact their lives.

This senseless act of violence underscores the urgency of combating homophobia and ensuring protection for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Let us all remember Arkmayer's spirit and work towards a world where love, acceptance, and understanding prevail.

As we continue to fight for justice and equality, the memory of Arkmayer Davis will inspire and guide us. May his legacy be one of love and unity.
