Beloved actor Jonathan Joss, known for his roles in popular shows such as Parks and Recreation and King of the Hill, has tragically passed away at the age of 59. The actor was fatally shot outside his former residence in Texas, on what should have been an ordinary Sunday. The incident, which took place on June 1, has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and his fan base.
The San Antonio police were called to the scene where they found Jonathan Joss critically injured. Despite their immediate attempts at life-saving interventions, the actor was pronounced dead at the location. Jonathan Joss was widely appreciated for his voice work as John Redcorn in King of the Hill and for his character Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation.
Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, who is believed to have been a neighbor, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Reports suggest that tensions had been present in the neighborhood, affecting Joss and his husband.
Joss's husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, took to social media to express his grief and share the harrowing experiences leading up to the tragedy. He revealed that their former home was previously set ablaze following years of threats from local residents. Despite reporting these threats to the authorities, adequate measures were not taken.
"That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done," Gonzales stated. The couple had returned to their former home to collect mail, a routine task that turned into a nightmare.
According to de Gonzales, what they found upon arrival was deeply distressing. "We discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view," he recounted, describing the profound emotional pain this caused. It was during this moment of vulnerability that a man allegedly approached them and began shouting homophobic slurs before fatally shooting Joss.
The tragic event has raised concerns about the motivations behind the attack. De Gonzales maintains that the hostility they faced was deeply rooted in homophobia. However, the San Antonio police have stated that, as of now, there is no evidence categorizing the killing as a hate crime. "Currently, the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss’s death was related to his sexual orientation," a police spokesperson explained. They emphasized that any new evidence could lead to changes in how the crime is prosecuted.
The sudden and shocking nature of Joss's death has left many in mourning. Colleagues from the entertainment industry, as well as fans, have expressed their sadness and paid tribute to the actor's legacy. Chris Pratt, who worked with Joss on Parks and Recreation and The Magnificent Seven, shared his sorrow on social media. "Damn. RIP Jonathan. Always such a kind dude. Sad to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones," Pratt wrote.
Nick Offerman, another co-star from Parks and Recreation, expressed the heartbreak felt by the cast. "The cast has been texting about it all day and we’re just heart-broken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy, and we loved having him as our chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy," Offerman shared.
Meanwhile, King of the Hill creators Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Saladin Patterson issued a joint statement, lamenting the loss of the voice behind John Redcorn. "Jonathan Joss brought John Redcorn to life for over a dozen seasons, including in the upcoming revival. His voice will be missed, and we extend our deepest condolences to Jonathan’s friends and family," they said.
Jonathan Joss's passing leaves a void in both the LGBTQ+ community and the entertainment industry. His contributions have left an indelible mark, and he will be remembered for his talent and the genuine warmth he brought to his work and relationships.
As investigations continue, the hope remains that justice will be served, and the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss will be fully revealed. Jonathan’s bravery and love for his husband mark him as a hero in his final moments, pushing his partner to safety and saving his life.
