Rutger published: Tragic Christmas Eve Incident in the Bronx: LGBTQ+ Community Mourns

On Christmas Eve, a deeply saddening event unfolded in the Bronx, leaving the LGBTQ+ community in shock and mourning. Arkmayer Davis, a 36-year-old gay man, was tragically stabbed to death, an act reportedly accompanied by anti-gay slurs and threats. Although a suspect has been apprehended, hate crime charges have not been filed.

Devastating Loss

Daris Davis, the heartbroken husband of the victim, recounted the harrowing event to local news outlets. "He took my heart away," Daris expressed, reflecting on the loss of his beloved spouse. The couple had been living in a homeless shelter after a fire destroyed their apartment on December 2, leaving them without most of their possessions.

The alleged attacker, Kayjon Yizar, had also lost his home in the same fire and was residing at the same shelter. Daris Davis believes that Yizar unjustly blamed them for the incident.

History of Hostility

Before the fatal attack, Yizar had a history of hostility towards the couple, frequently shouting slurs and making threats. Daris recounted a specific incident from July when Yizar threatened them with violence, using derogatory language and expressing disdain for the LGBTQ+ community.

The tragic event occurred shortly after Daris last saw Arkmayer at a laundromat. Upon returning to their room, Daris found his husband unconscious and bleeding from multiple stab wounds inflicted on his arm, leg, and torso. Despite efforts to revive him, Arkmayer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Seeking Justice

Daris Davis played a crucial role in identifying the suspect from surveillance footage taken outside the shelter. Yizar has since been arrested and is currently in custody. Speaking after a recent grand jury hearing, Daris expressed hope for justice in the case, advocating for severe consequences for the accused.

"I’m glad that he’s gonna get served the justice that he rightfully deserves," Daris stated, indicating his desire for a stringent sentence. "He should never have a chance to see daylight again," he added, emphasizing the need for isolation to reflect the loneliness experienced by his late husband.

Community Support

Arkmayer's mother, Gertrude Davis, has also been vocal, sharing her grief and urging other parents to cherish their children amid the presence of "monsters" in the world. Holding a cherished photo of her son, she described him as a loving and caring individual who harmed no one.

This tragic incident has sent ripples throughout the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting ongoing issues of discrimination and violence. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of support, solidarity, and vigilance in advocating for equal rights and safety for all members of the community.
