Tommy Woelfel's Journey to Becoming a Spin Instructor in Los Angeles

Tommy Woelfel's story begins in the bustling streets of Los Angeles in the 1990s. Like many young aspirants drawn to the City of Angels, Tommy arrived with dreams of making it big in the acting world. However, his path took an unexpected turn when he accepted a position at Todd Tramp's Body Sculpting L.A., a fitness haven nestled near West Hollywood.

It was at this gym where Tommy's passion for spinning was ignited. He participated in his first spin class and was immediately captivated by the dynamic and engaging nature of the workout.

“I fell in love with it,” he recalls. “After that first class, I couldn't stop myself from attending more. I knew I wanted to become a spinning instructor.”

Driven by this newfound passion, Tommy began teaching at renowned fitness centers including Gold's Gym, Equinox, and Crunch. Over the past 26 years, he has established himself as a prominent figure in the spinning community, attributing his longevity in the field to the profound health benefits that spinning provides in a short amount of time.

The Benefits of Spinning

Spinning, as Tommy explains, is an incredibly efficient form of exercise. “It's one of the most intense and effective ways to burn calories,” he explains. “Plus, because it's on a bike, there's no impact on your joints. The variety in speed and resistance keeps things interesting, so boredom is never an issue.”

Tommy is dedicated to ensuring his classes remain engaging and challenging. “I never want anyone to feel like they've settled into a routine. The goal is to keep everyone on their toes, constantly surprising their bodies with what's next. This involves mixing up the music and workout intensity to keep the heart rate fluctuating throughout the class.”

The Power of Music in Fitness

One of the joys of Tommy's role as a spinning instructor is curating music playlists that motivate and entertain. “As an instructor, you get to be a bit of a DJ,” he shares. “Choosing the right music for class activities like hills, jumps, or sprints is crucial. It makes the intense cardio workout a lot more fun.”

Tommy emphasizes the satisfaction he derives from contributing to his clients' health journeys. “Helping people achieve or maintain their fitness goals is incredibly rewarding. Even as a small part of their journey, it feels like a big personal accomplishment for me.”

Facing the Initial Challenges of Spinning

Tommy acknowledges that starting a spin class can be daunting for newcomers. “It's going to be tough initially,” he admits. “But I make it a point to instill confidence in them, assuring them that they'll improve and gain strength with time.”

Interestingly, the spinning community has fostered connections beyond fitness. Tommy has witnessed love blossom within his classes, including a couple who met during his sessions and are now happily married.

Visibility as a Gay Dad and Husband

For Tommy, spinning has played a role in his personal life as well. It was instrumental in the growth of his relationship with his husband, Rich Vaughn, a fertility law attorney. Rich attended Tommy's class, and their bond strengthened from there. The couple, now together for 23 years, are proud parents to two sons, Aiden and Austin.

Tommy and Rich strive to be visible as gay parents, hoping to serve as a source of inspiration and support for others in the LGBTQ+ community looking to start families.

Rich, who founded the International Fertility Law Group, specializes in fertility and surrogacy laws globally and is committed to easing the path for aspiring LGBTQ+ parents.
