Tom Blyth Stars in a New Gay Romantic Thriller

Tom Blyth, known for his role in "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," is taking on a new challenge in an exciting romantic thriller about undercover cops, titled "Plainclothes." Directed by Carmen Emmi, this film delves into the complexities of identity and love set against the backdrop of 1990s Syracuse, New York.

"Plainclothes" centers around Lucas, portrayed by Blyth, who is a working-class undercover police officer. Lucas's job involves the morally complex task of entrapping gay men under charges of public indecency. However, as the story unfolds, Lucas finds himself questioning his own identity when he develops feelings for Andrew, played by Russell Tovey. Andrew is not just any man, but one of Lucas's targets in a sting operation aimed at targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Creative Collaboration and Authenticity

Upon reading the script, Blyth was immediately drawn to the project. He found an artistic connection with director Carmen Emmi, which fueled his enthusiasm to bring Lucas's character to life. As he explained, "I felt an immediate creative match with Carmen from the start."

The film features intense and intimate scenes between Blyth and Tovey, skillfully crafted with the help of Joey Massa, the film’s intimacy coordinator. Blyth spoke highly of the process, noting, "The intimacy was very vivid, and Joey was incredible. It felt very organic." Massa’s guidance empowered Blyth and Tovey to lead their scenes with confidence, making these moments resonate deeply on screen.

Behind the Inspiration of "Plainclothes"

Carmen Emmi conceived the idea for "Plainclothes" in 2016 after reading an article in the Los Angeles Times. The article detailed the use of undercover police operations to arrest men in a Long Beach park bathroom. This revelation struck a chord with Emmi, especially as he was exploring his own coming out experience. The character of Lucas emerged from a blend of these personal insights and conversations with his brother, who was entering the police force at the time.

Emmi chose to set the film in his hometown during the 90s, a period that mirrored his own struggles with identity as a child. "I made this as a way for my younger self to finally exhale," Emmi reflected.

Addressing Historical Realities

For Blyth, accepting the role of Lucas meant confronting the historical realities of LGBTQ+ persecution. Initially unaware that such sting operations extended into the late 20th century, Blyth was shocked to learn about their prevalence in recent history. "I knew about it happening up until the ’50s, but I wrongly assumed it had ended. Carmen sent me the article that inspired the story, and I was shocked by its recency," Blyth said.

"Plainclothes" is not just a film about love and identity, but a reminder of the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community throughout history. It highlights the ongoing journey towards acceptance and equality, themes that Blyth and the film's creators hope will resonate with audiences today.

Tom Blyth's Growing Filmography

Aside from "Plainclothes," Blyth has gained recognition for his portrayal of Coriolanus Snow in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," the prequel to "The Hunger Games." He stars alongside Rachel Zegler and has appeared in productions like "Billy the Kid" and "The Gilded Age." Blyth is also set to star in the film adaptation of Emily Henry's novel, "People We Meet On Vacation."

With "Plainclothes," Blyth continues to challenge himself and explore complex characters, bringing depth and authenticity to his performance. The film is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and promises to offer viewers a compelling narrative that intertwines romance, identity, and social commentary.
