Tim Cook, Apple's Trailblazing CEO, Steps Down

Tim Cook, who made history as the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company, has announced his decision to step down from his role as Apple's CEO in September 2026. Cook, who has been at the helm of Apple since 2011, initially took over as CEO following Steve Jobs' departure. Cook will transition to a new role as Apple's executive board chairman. Succeeding him as CEO will be Johnny Ternus, a seasoned hardware engineer with over 25 years of experience at Apple.

In a heartfelt letter published on Monday, Cook praised Ternus, describing him as a "brilliant" thinker who has played a significant role in the development of Apple's most successful products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and wearable devices.

A Journey of Creativity and Connection

Cook reflected on his tenure at Apple with deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead a company that has revolutionized the way people connect and express themselves creatively. "For the past 15 years, I've started just about every morning the same way," Cook shared in his letter. "I open my email and read notes from Apple users worldwide."

Expressing his profound appreciation, Cook wrote, "I feel a gratitude that I cannot put into words, that I somehow got to be the person on the other end of those emails, leading a company that ignites imaginations and enriches lives in such profound ways it defies description. What an honor and a privilege it has been."

Under Cook's leadership, Apple reached unprecedented heights, achieving a market capitalization of $4 trillion. The company's products have become integral to daily life across various sectors, including media, medicine, business, and government.

The Impact of Coming Out

In 2014, Cook made headlines when he publicly came out as gay in a personal essay, becoming a role model for the LGBTQ+ community. Although he had been open about his sexuality with family, friends, and colleagues, his public announcement marked a significant moment in corporate America.

In his essay, Cook expressed pride in his identity, describing his sexuality as "among the greatest gifts God has given me." He hoped his openness would inspire others to insist on their equality and provide comfort to those who feel isolated. Cook emphasized his commitment to using Apple's influence to "do something for the greater good."

A Heartfelt Goodbye

In his farewell letter, Cook reassured everyone that "This is not goodbye." He took the opportunity to express his personal gratitude, not on behalf of Apple, but from himself, "Tim," as he wrote.

Cook reminisced about his journey from growing up in a rural area to leading one of the world's most influential companies. "Thank you for the confidence and kindness you've shown me," he wrote. "Thank you for saying hi to me on the street and in our stores."

As Cook prepares to step down, his legacy as a pioneering leader continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of LGBTQ+ leaders in the corporate world.
