The shocking murder of a 24-year-old gay man in Spain has seen justice delivered this week, as three men responsible for the brutal attack have been given significant prison sentences. Justice for Samuel Luiz
The heartbreaking case began in July 2021, when Samuel Luiz, a nursing assistant, was out enjoying a night with friends in the Galician city of A Coruña. The night took a dark turn during the early hours of July 3rd. Luiz was speaking on his phone with friends when he was suddenly confronted by two men who falsely believed he was recording them. Despite attempts to clarify that Luiz was on a video call, the situation escalated rapidly.
One of the men threatened Luiz, saying, "Either stop recording, or I’ll kill you, f*g." The situation quickly turned violent, with one of the men assaulting Luiz. Despite the chaos, Luiz's friend Vanesa, who was on the other end of the video call, could hear the horrific attack unfolding. "The video was blocked, but the audio kept playing and I did not know what exactly was happening," she later recounted. "I only heard the blows and Lina yelling: ‘Leave him, he’s my friend, please leave him!'"
Although the initial attack left Luiz bruised and shaken, he remained conscious. Tragically, the situation worsened when the initial assailant returned with a group of at least a dozen more individuals. Together, they brutally beat Luiz, leaving him fatally injured on the street.
The Aftermath of a Heinous Crime
Eyewitness accounts describe a "pack of humans" relentlessly attacking Luiz, who tried desperately to escape. Despite his efforts to flee, Luiz was repeatedly caught and assaulted over a distance of more than 150 meters down the street. The brutality of the attack, amplified by bystanders who cheered on the violence, shocked the nation.
Luiz was found unconscious by his friend Lina, who arrived at the scene only to find him abandoned by his attackers. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The murder of Samuel Luiz ignited a wave of outrage across Spain, sparking massive demonstrations and calls for "Justicia para Samuel" (Justice for Samuel).
In response to the outcry, the Spanish government vowed to address the rising tide of homophobic violence in the country. Diego Montaña, Alejandro Freire, and Kaio Amaral were sentenced to 24 years, 20 years, and 20 years and six months in prison, respectively, for their roles in the murder of Samuel Luiz. A fourth individual, Alejandro Míguez, received a 10-year sentence for his complicity in the crime. The judge, in passing these sentences, cited the perpetrators' "absolute lack of empathy and cruelty."
