Three individuals who identify as gender nonconforming were subjected to a violent attack by a group of men at a local brewery in York, Pennsylvania, on Friday night. The victims were targeted with homophobic slurs and physical violence, according to Brady Pappas, one of the individuals involved.
In a statement shared on social media from a hospital, Pappas recounted the terrifying ordeal and expressed frustration over the initial police response, which he claimed dismissed the severity of the attack.
The incident began at Gift Horse Brewing Company, where Pappas and friends, Tragedy and Vayne, were spending an evening out. As their night came to an end, they encountered a table of five individuals who began making derogatory comments.
"I was in the bathroom," Pappas shared, "and when I returned, a verbal exchange had started between Vayne and the group." The group continued their harassment as the trio left the establishment and began crossing the street. The attackers followed, hurling insults and surrounding them on the sidewalk.
Despite attempts to walk away, the harassment escalated, culminating in a physical attack on Vayne, who was choked and lost consciousness briefly. Pappas and Tragedy struggled to intervene, fearing for their friend's life until a staff member from the brewery intervened, pulling the attacker away and restraining him.
The confrontation took a concerning turn when police arrived. According to Pappas, the police were dismissive of their account and the attackers were allowed to leave the scene, with both parties, including Vayne, receiving disorderly conduct charges.
This outcome outraged members of the local community, prompting public statements from York City officials. York Mayor Michael Helfrich assured that the matter was being taken seriously, and York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow promised a thorough review of the case.
Gift Horse Brewing Company condemned the actions of the attackers, stating that the individuals involved in the assault were permanently banned from their property. The brewery staff corroborated Pappas’s account and provided information to the police to aid in their investigation.
"Several despicable, poor excuses for human beings attacked three people because they viewed them as different," the brewery’s management wrote in a public post. They also expressed gratitude towards the witnesses who defended the victims and provided statements to the police.
As the investigation continues, York City Police are reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage, and consulting with the district attorney to ensure appropriate charges are filed. The Human Relations Commission has been notified, and a trauma counselor has been deployed to support those affected by the incident.
Pappas expressed deep concern over the increasing hostility faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the current political climate. "Life has become frightening," he wrote. "There are moments every day where I feel physically unsafe due to strangers’ negative interactions. What was once a place of joy has become unrecognizable."
Despite the ordeal, Pappas emphasized the importance of standing together as a community. "As Vayne said, we must support each other. However, we must also be cautious because such aggressors don’t know when to stop."
This incident underscores the urgent need for continued advocacy and safety measures for LGBTQ+ individuals, reminding us all of the importance of creating inclusive and safe spaces for everyone.
