Rutger published: The Vivienne's Ambitious Broadway Dreams Cut Short by Tragic Passing

The Vivienne, celebrated winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race and a rising star in musical theatre, had grand aspirations of gracing the Broadway stage before their untimely death. This revelation comes from their long-time manager, Simon Jones, who shared insights into The Vivienne’s career trajectory and the aspirations they held.

The beloved drag performer, whose real name was James Lee Williams, passed away suddenly on January 5th at their residence near Chester. At just 32 years old, The Vivienne’s life was tragically cut short due to cardiac arrest, linked to the effects of ketamine, a drug they had been using.

A Star on the Rise

The Vivienne first captured international attention by winning the first season of Drag Race UK in 2019, a victory that catapulted them to fame and opened many doors in the entertainment industry. Their career flourished on both stage and screen, showcasing their versatility and talent.

At the time of their passing, The Vivienne was set to take on the role of the Childcatcher in the UK tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. They had also recently completed a successful stint as the Wicked Witch in a London production of The Wizard of Oz, a role that had garnered them much acclaim.

Vision and Ambition

In a heartfelt interview, Simon Jones, who had been instrumental in managing The Vivienne’s career, revealed their shared vision of breaking new ground and achieving superstar status. “We were so set on doing things that were going to break down walls,” Jones explained, describing the close partnership he had with The Vivienne.

Jones, a prominent PR expert and recipient of the LGBTQ+ Trailblazer award at the Metro Awards, expressed his commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ talent and dismantling barriers within the industry. His efforts included securing The Vivienne’s participation in the 2023 season of Dancing On Ice, making history as the first drag star to compete on the show, ultimately reaching the finals with dance partner Colin Grafton.

“My goal for Viv was to turn them into a global superstar. We were strategically planning appearances on shows like Dancing on Ice and Celebrity Hunted, and we were in talks for other opportunities, including a spot on a popular Christmas special,” Jones recounted.

A Dream Deferred

As Jones recounted, the ultimate aim was to elevate The Vivienne’s career from the London stage to the West End, and eventually to Broadway. “Their role as the Wicked Witch was a huge success, and they were making waves in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Broadway was well within reach,” he lamented. “It’s heartbreaking that their journey was halted so abruptly.”

Jones emphasized that The Vivienne’s career was just beginning to ascend to new heights. Following their triumph on Drag Race UK, they became the first international contestant to join the All Stars season 7 in 2022. That year, they were honored with the Attitude Magazine Inspiration Award, a testament to their impact and potential.

Posthumously, The Vivienne was awarded the Icon Award at the Metro Awards, a poignant recognition of their influence and legacy.

Remembering The Vivienne

Despite their passing, The Vivienne’s spirit and ambition continue to inspire. Their family has since collaborated with the substance abuse charity Adferiad to raise awareness and support for those struggling with addiction, a cause now close to their hearts.

“The groundwork was laid, and it felt like we were on the cusp of something extraordinary,” Jones reflected. “Andrew Lloyd Webber admired them deeply, and their talent was undeniable. It’s a loss that’s hard to comprehend.”

The sudden loss of such a vibrant and promising star serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by many in the LGBTQ+ community, and the importance of support and awareness around substance abuse.

As we remember The Vivienne and celebrate their legacy, we invite you to share your thoughts and memories. Let’s continue the conversation in a respectful and supportive manner.
