Rutger published: The Slippery Slope That Wasn't: Debunking the Myth of Human-Animal Marriage

Back in those early 2000s and 2010s, people were really fired up about whether same-sex marriage should be legalized. Among all sorts, there was one strange claim that kept popping up: some folks insisted that allowing same-sex marriages would somehow open Pandora's box, leading us straight down a slippery slope towards human-animal marriages. This wasn't based on logic, but rather on fear, and it got a lot more attention than it deserved from certain conservative circles.

questioning misguided marriage fears

Take Rep. Louie Gohmert from Texas, who was pretty vocal about his concerns with changing what he called "traditional marriage." Back in 2013, he warned that once you start changing what marriage means, it might not be long before people start marrying their pets. Fast forward a decade, and guess what? He's still in Congress, and, surprise, surprise, his slippery slope theory turned out not just wrong.

the bizarre myth that wouldn't die

James Dobson, a well-known evangelical voice, had similar fears. In his 2004 book, he tossed around an idea about men possibly marrying, believe it or not, donkeys. Then Bill O'Reilly jumped in with his own list—goats and ducks, even dolphins, had cameo spots on his speculative roster. And don't forget Sen. John Cornyn, who nearly brought up this idea in a speech before deciding better. Despite their warnings, here we are, still waiting on those human-animal marriage proposals that never came.

Even House Speaker Mike Johnson chimed in, suggesting marriage equality might lead us down that same bizarre path. These claims were so far-fetched that even some more moderate conservatives were like, “Hey, maybe we should stop with these crazy comparisons—they're making us look bad.”

fear-driven narratives vs. reality

Here are some cold hard facts: from 2015 onwards, when same-sex marriage was legalized across America thanks in part due Obergefell v. Hodges, not a single state has tried passing laws about human-animal marriages. No bills, no petitions, nothing whatsoever. Clearly, those fears were just that—imagined fears.

So why were these far-out ideas spreading like wildfire? Probably because they stirred up feelings by lumping together same-sex marriage and bestiality—something most people naturally find quite upsetting. The opposition often took this sensational route, bypassing logic and going straight at emotions.

what was really behind those scare tactics?

Politicians like Cornyn and Johnson most likely knew deep down just how implausible human-animal marriages were. Both are law-savvy, and they get that no court or governing body would ever give such unions a green light. By making LGBTQ+ relationships sound as extreme as bestiality, they stoked negative views toward that community.

Such misleading claims have driven a significant wedge between LGBTQ+ communities and conservative politics. Even among gay conservatives, dealing with these consistent attacks has been disheartening, if not downright alienating. It's tough supporting a party that seems intent on whipping up fear and division against you.

Ultimately, these absurd fears have faded from any serious conversation. They serve as a stark reminder just how far some were willing go in opposing equality. Their theories? Baseless. Their intentions? Questionable. Their results? Absolutely nothing.
