The project, which had been dormant for nearly a decade, is being brought back to life by passionate advocates who aim to honor the achievements of LGBTQ individuals in the world of sports.
A New Vision for Inclusion and Recognition
The Sports Equality Foundation is committed to shining a light on the contributions of LGBTQ athletes, coaches, and advocates who have broken new ground in sports. As board chair Robert Goman puts it, this project is about celebrating “the groundbreaking achievements of LGBTQ athletes, coaches, and advocates who have paved the way for inclusion in sports.” The Foundation hopes that by honoring these trailblazers, future generations will be inspired to push boundaries and achieve greatness.
This effort is particularly significant in today’s climate, where anti-trans sentiments are being voiced in some circles. By highlighting the positive impact of LGBTQ individuals in sports, the Hall of Fame seeks to foster acceptance and appreciation for diversity within athletic communities worldwide.
Getting Back in the Game
The upcoming event at Park MGM in Las Vegas on August 10 marks a new beginning for the Hall of Fame. The selection process for the new class of inductees, set to be announced on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, will be an intriguing one. This includes acknowledging international figures and supporters who have championed for LGBTQ rights in sports.
