Rutger published: The Joy of Being a Season Ticket Holder: A Personal Journey

Growing up in Houston, Texas, and now calling Los Angeles home, I found myself in a bitty sports pickle. How do you start rooting wholeheartedly in a city where your home team feels like an old friend? I couldn't just switch my Astros cap out willy-nilly. For a while, I felt a bit like a sports orphan in a new place.

Finding my sports family in LA

The game-changer? Season tickets. Plunging headfirst—heart and wallet—into supporting a local LA team was my ticket (pun intended) out. It wasn't just about watching games; it was about finding my place here, miles from where I grew up.

Sure, there are times when watching from your couch feels right, but nothing beats that stadium buzz. The energy just sweeps you up. It took me from passive viewer straight down die-hard fan lane, faster than you can say "Go team!".

Los Angeles stole a piece (or maybe all) my heart with Angel City FC. The club's birth coincided with my move, and by becoming a founding season ticket holder in 2022, I went all in. It deepened my sports soul in ways I hadn't dreamed.

Game after game, whether we won or lost, added layers and layers onto my soccer love. I didn't expect it, but those season tickets became a cherished ritual. Funny how life turns out, huh?

Exploring new courts

While soccer holds a special place, women's basketball truly owns my sports heart. After falling head over heels with Angel City, I set my sights on hoops and scored season tickets with a view—11 rows back at Sparks games. Affordable and thrilling, I felt like I'd hit a sports jackpot.

Almost all 22 home games had me and my crew ready, sometimes converted friends tagging along as new season ticket holders. Talk about a slam dunk! I also found myself in a community I never saw coming. I once thought season ticket holders were all about suits and fancy boxes, but they're just dedicated folks like you and me, filling those seats game after game.

Discovering how affordable and accessible women's sports can be was a revelation. Even through tough seasons with disappointing records, my commitment never wavered.

Creating unforgettable memories

Being a season ticket holder isn't just about watching games; it unlocks doors you didn't know existed. Like when I got picked at random, yep, little ol' me, and presented a ceremonial game ball at a Sparks game. Standing there, hearing my name, was a surreal joy—a memory that'll stick with me forever.

It was a moment that summed up why being a season ticket holder feels so rewarding. Certainly one I'll never forget.

Building a community around me

Who would've thought I'd be woven so tightly within LA's sports fabric? Yet, here I am, basking in both Sparks and Angel City camaraderie. If you've ever thought about season tickets, and you're able, take that leap. Be it pro or local, what you gain transcends mere fandom.

Season tickets aren't just a purchase; they're a passport. You're partaking in something bigger, with a community that shares your ups and downs, no matter where you're from.

And if, like me, you're passionate about women in sports, "Jockular," a podcast hosted by E.R. Fightmaster, Katie Kershaw, and Tien Tran, should be on your radar. It's a celebration and a resource, all in one.

Don't forget, our newsletter serves up heartwarming sports narratives and updates, keeping you linked with a community that feels like home.
