Rutger published: The Impact of Family Visibility at Women's Soccer Events for LGBTQ+ Fans

At a recent women's soccer game, something truly heartwarming caught my eye, especially as someone who supports LGBTQ+ visibility in sports. Coach Jackie J, a passionate advocate and fan, described her experience upon seeing a stroller area brimming with two-mom families. For her, this wasn't just an ordinary sight—it was a powerful sign that progress, representation, and a sense everyone belongs are within reach.

Jackie J, well-known in women's sports circles as an advocate and content creator, shared just how much this moment meant. "Never before in my life had I seen a space like a stroller pickup filled mostly with two-mom families," she said with excitement. "Oh my God, it meant so much." To many in LGBTQ+ communities, this visibility confirms that they're right where they belong, challenging outdated ideas about family.

Why visibility in family spaces matters

Jackie J remembers wrestling with an old misconception—that being a lesbian meant giving up on having a family. "That was something I grieved over as a kid," she admitted. "But realizing you can have a family and be part a community with shared experiences? That's huge."

Seeing so many two-mom families at a game sends an empowering message. For Jackie and others at that game, it created comfort and normalcy. "Seeing that as a kid would've meant everything," Jackie reflected. "I hope it shapes how kids there view what 'family' can be."

Jackie dreams that as society moves forward, diverse family structures will be so common that kids won't even question them. "Maybe it'll be nothing," she said, "because they won't even notice how it shapes their idea about family."

Advocacy in women's sports

For Jackie J, it goes beyond these emotional moments; she stands as a strong advocate in women's sports and LGBTQ+ representation. Recently honored by ADWEEK as one one sport's 25 Most Powerful Women, Jackie has amplified queer voices in sports with a mix humor, advocacy, and education. She's a relatable figure, often describing herself as "the fans' coach" rather than a traditional journalist. Her content, reaching vast audiences, offers thought-provoking commentary on being a fan, honing in on queer themes. "So much love I have women's sports stems from fans," she explains. "The queer families and spaces bring me immense joy."

The power representation

Jackie J focuses not just on visibility on-field, but in stands, too. "Often in queer representation, it's family that gets overlooked," she pointed out. "And that's so important." Her work aims ensure young LGBTQ+ people see themselves in every part life—from sports, family, and beyond.

The rising enthusiasm women's sports, together an increasing spotlight on representation, signals broader cultural shift. Events like Washington Spirit soccer game transcend just sport; they're about community, identity, and acceptance.

As Jackie continues forging change, she serves as inspiration many, proving that fandom can spark transformation. Her story showcases how visibility and representation can help create more inclusive, understanding worlds.
