Personal Journey Through Global Immigration Systems
My journey through multiple immigration systems around the world has been a unique one. As a refugee from Russia due to my involvement in LGBT activism, I relocated to Israel in 2018, hoping to secure an American visa. I was invited to speak at a disability rights conference in the U.S., alongside my wife, about intersectionality. Secretly, we planned to seek asylum once in the U.S.
Our hopes were dashed when our visa requests were denied, leaving us stranded in Israel without belongings, financial support, or legal work status. After four months, we moved to the UK and applied for asylum there. My childhood dream of living in the U.S. remained unfulfilled, yet in hindsight, I feel relief for not being there given the current climate.
Having been a queer refugee in Russia, Israel, and the UK, I have experienced firsthand the impact of anti-immigration policies in the U.S., especially those during the Trump administration. These measures feel personal, as they not only threaten the historical foundations of a nation built by immigrants but also have the potential to influence immigration policies in the UK and across Europe.
UK Politics and the Influence of American Anti-Immigration Sentiments
Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party has seen a rise in support, partly due to backing from billionaire Elon Musk. Despite complexities in their relationship, Musk’s financial and strategic support has the potential to alter the British political landscape.
There is growing concern among UK citizens and political analysts about whether the aggressive anti-immigration ideologies of MAGA are spreading across the Atlantic, and what implications this could have on UK sovereignty.
The Reform Party has been linked to anti-immigration protests in the UK and is notorious for its anti-LGBTQ+, particularly anti-transgender, policies. In a manifesto released in June 2024, Farage pledged to eliminate "transgender ideology" in schools, including halting social transitioning for trans youth, arguing that it causes irreversible harm. Ageism and xenophobia accompany these anti-LGBTQ+ stances.
The party’s proposals to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights and amend the Equality Act 2010 pose significant threats to the LGBT community. Refugees and asylum seekers like myself, particularly those at the intersection of these issues, face increased danger across Britain, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The far-right’s growing influence in the UK is alarming. On February 1st, thousands gathered in Central London to support far-right influencer Tommy Robinson, recently imprisoned by the British government. Known for anti-immigration and transphobic rhetoric, Robinson also receives support from Musk. Demonstrators donned "Make England Great Again" caps, echoing MAGA sentiments.
Resilience and Hope Amidst Adversity
Despite these challenges, my arrival in the UK marked a significant improvement in personal safety compared to my experiences in Russia and Ukraine. Regardless of the ruling party, British society’s acceptance of diversity provided a sense of belonging. Even if Reform gains power, I hope that the ingrained ideas of universal human rights in the UK will resist rapid erosion.
UK LGBT rights activists are contemplating aiding trans* asylum seekers from the U.S. following Trump’s executive orders affecting them. With the UK's National Health Service offering free healthcare and robust support systems, it is conceivable that some trans* individuals may seek refuge here.
While Canada might be geographically preferable for American LGBT refugees, it is surprising to many that the UK is more welcoming compared to several EU countries.
Challenges Facing Europe
Musk’s "Make Europe Great Again" campaign has concerning implications in Germany, where he supports the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Their alignment with Russia and homophobic rhetoric further endangers LGBT refugees.
All authoritarian regimes commence their repression by targeting marginalized communities, with the danger spreading to broader societal freedoms. As a child, I learned about liberty, individual rights, and diversity through American culture. However, these values now face threats, not only in the U.S. but globally. Urgent action is necessary to counteract these regressive forces before they gain further ground.
