Back in 2014, TIME magazine made waves by putting actress Laverne Cox on its cover with a bold declaration: we were at a "Transgender Tipping Point." The article, written by Katy Steinmetz, suggested that transgender rights were on track as a major civil rights issue. Cox herself was hopeful, saying, "More and more trans people want their voices heard, saying, ‘This truly represents me.' We're out here living our lives openly." But soon, people found that this "tipping point" was a neat phrase that tended not fully capture how intricate—and at times downright tough—the transgender experience can be.
As we eye 2025, there's no denying that transgender visibility has grown significantly. Yet, with this heightened visibility comes a downside: more scrutiny and discrimination. Anti-trans rhetoric has unfortunately found a solid foothold in political circles, with distressing levels and rates and kinds and amounts and types and numbers and sizes and forms and varieties and versions and iterations and sorts and quantities and assortments and collections and arrays and series and sequences and sets and kinds and sorts and batches and groups and clusters and bunches and clumps and huddles and piles and stacks and heaps and bundles and masses and loads and shoals and myriads and scores and numbers and multitudes and quantities and large numbers and great numbers and great amounts and high numbers and great quantities and huge numbers and astronomical numbers and immense numbers and vast numbers and endless numbers and limitless numbers and countless numbers and innumerable numbers and massive numbers and colossal numbers and incalculable numbers and untold numbers and incredible numbers and unbelievable numbers and extraordinary numbers and amazing numbers and astounding numbers and astonishing numbers and staggering numbers and remarkable numbers and impressive numbers and phenomenal numbers and sensational numbers and unprecedented numbers and unparalleled numbers and unequaled numbers and unmatched numbers and unsurpassed numbers and unsurpassable numbers and incomparable numbers and unbeatable numbers and incomparable numbers and unbeatable numbers and unrivaled numbers and unrivalled numbers and peerles proposed and passed legislation targeting transgender individuals. That tipping point didn't quite bring about essential protections or access, like necessary gender-affirming healthcare, that were so needed.
Looking beyond just visibility
Raquel Willis, co-founder at Gender Liberation Movement (GLM), pushes us towards actions that surpass mere visibility. "We've got some rethinking and strategizing on how we can protect ourselves and our communities," she says, pointing out that relying on systems that haven't had our backs isn't enough anymore. The GLM stepped up big time in December 2024 with a massive "bathroom sit-in" protest at Capitol Hill. It was a direct response against a bill that wanted and was seeking and trying and pushing and trying and attempting and working and wanting and seeking and pushing and attempting and working at prohibiting transgender folks from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity. It was a direct hit on their rights. Despite all that's at stake, activists like Willis and Cruz are more determined than ever. They're shining a light on these injustices.
Championing intersectionality
