As the series 9-1-1: Lone Star reached its gripping conclusion, fans were left on the edge of their seats with an asteroid headed straight for Texas. The show’s dedicated team of first responders faced what could have been a cataclysmic finale.
In an event worthy of the big screen, the series did not close on a note of destruction. Instead, the disaster of astronomical proportions concluded with the show’s beloved characters largely unscathed. Firefighter Owen, portrayed by Rob Lowe, had a nail-biting moment as he attempted to prevent a nuclear meltdown following the asteroid's impact. However, through strategic flashforwards, it was revealed that Owen survived the ordeal.
For the show’s queer viewership, much of the anticipation revolved around Owen’s son, TK, played by Ronen Rubinstein, and his husband, Carlos, brought to life by Rafael L. Silva. The couple, affectionately dubbed Tarlos by fans, was at the heart of the show’s emotional core.
During the season five finale, the future of Tarlos seemed precarious. As they responded to one final emergency call, TK was torn between his duty as an emergency medical technician and the looming asteroid crisis. Adding to their turmoil, the couple had recently faced the disappointment of not being approved to adopt TK’s half-brother Jonah, a decision influenced by their hazardous careers. Despite the setback, hope lingered as TK hinted at a "perfect solution" for their situation.
Ultimately, TK decided to leave his job, opting to devote himself fully to caring for Jonah. In a move that defied the harmful trope of "burying your gays," the series offered Tarlos a contented family life.
Reflecting on this narrative decision, 9-1-1: Lone Star writer Rashad Raisani expressed his desire to grant the couple a "truly happy ending." He explained, "I wanted that last scene with them to be a celebration of where they are as a couple. They’ve come so far together, and they’ve earned their joy through suffering and sacrifice." Raisani emphasized that the final scenes captured a sense of relief, as if "the weight of the world" had been lifted from their shoulders.
Ronen Rubinstein, who portrayed TK, shared with Variety his sentiments about the show’s conclusion, noting that the storyline for Tarlos felt right. The introduction of Jonah suggested a natural progression for the couple’s journey. "It’s a cathartic, beautiful full circle," Rubinstein noted, celebrating the "happily ever after" afforded to TK and Carlos.
The couple’s journey throughout the series resonated deeply with audiences, culminating in a wedding during the fourth season’s finale. This milestone further solidified their place as fan favorites within the series.
Looking ahead, there remains a possibility for Tarlos to cross over into new narratives. The door is open for their appearance in the original 9-1-1 series. Raisani expressed openness to this potential, saying, "I hope that that does happen. I certainly wouldn’t say no to it." Rubinstein echoed this sentiment, suggesting it "would be kind of impossible to say no" to revisiting the characters.
For fans eager to relive the journey of 9-1-1: Lone Star, the series is available for streaming on Disney+.
