The Blessed Madonna calls out Róisín Murphy over transgender comments

The Blessed Madonna, a notable DJ and music producer, has openly called out Irish musician Róisín Murphy over her recent remarks on transgender identity. This exchange has stirred up significant discussion within LGBTQ+ circles, drawing attention once again on transgender individuals' struggles in our changing social environment.

What Róisín Murphy posted

On October 21st, Róisín Murphy, renowned as a disco diva and one-time member from Moloko, took her thoughts on X, known previously as Twitter. She shared a graph highlighting a supposed drop in young adults, ages 18-22, identifying as transgender or non-binary from 2022 through 2024. Alongside it, she wrote: "It was never real. Terribly sad though. Absolute havoc wreaked on children, families, and society."

The data she cited originated from Tufts University's Cooperative Election Study. This study's survey results examined U.S. young adults' gender identities over several years. While data showed a decline, Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, advised caution. Twenge suggested it might reflect societal acceptance issues rather than actual identity change.

Reaction from LGBTQ+ voices

The reaction on social media was swift and strong. Many critics pointed out that during times when transphobia peaks, fewer people might feel safe openly identifying as transgender. One user remarked, "People are less likely be openly trans when hate speech gets a green light from those in power. What's your point?" Murphy fired back, "I think you mean when dissenting voices are acknowledged."

Murphy's post follows a string previous controversial takes on puberty blockers and transgender youth, which had already stirred criticism from LGBTQ+ quarters. Responding hotly, The Blessed Madonna—Marea Renee Stamper—didn't hold back, condemning Murphy through an Instagram video.

The Blessed Madonna's heartfelt response

Stamer, who identifies as non-binary, first tried reaching out privately, hoping Murphy might reconsider her stand. Stamper even pulled Murphy out from a birthday event lineup because past comments on transgender issues. In their video, they expressed disappointment: "You had me fooled once, you really did. But you were never a queer icon. You're just another dusty TERF who knows how count queer money and serve a look." This frustration came through clear and strong.

Stamer shared intimate reflections too, talking about transgender people bravely embracing their true selves despite societal hurdles. They recounted a story about their grandmother, who lived closeted as a lesbian, highlighting fears preventing some living authentically even now.

Offering support and solidarity

Stamer ended their video with a touching message, extending unwavering support transgender youth: "If any you sweet trans babies need anything, I'm here. You will never want a roof over your head or a dog pet as long as I'm around." This warm gesture emphasized commitment supporting and safeguarding transgender people.

What this means moving forward

The conversations Murphy's remarks and Stamper's response have sparked are opening up a critical dialogue about public figures' responsibilities within LGBTQ+ spaces. It's a reminder how vital empathy, understanding, and relentless support are, especially during tough times.

As LGBTQ+ communities continue facing complex issues, voices like The Blessed Madonna's play an essential role in boosting acceptance and respect. By standing strong with transgender folks, allies can help break down misconceptions and build a more embracing society everyone.
