The recent implementation of Texas' "Don't Say Gay" law is creating significant challenges for transgender students, as the effects of the law become more evident in schools across the state. This legislation, officially known as the "Bill of Parental Rights," was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott in June. It includes measures that restrict discussions about LGBTQ+ topics, dismantle gay-straight alliances, and prohibit school staff from supporting transgender students.
One of the most concerning outcomes of this law is the issue of deadnaming, where students are forced to use names they no longer identify with. For many trans students, this is a deeply distressing experience. Ethan Brignac, a high school senior at Wylie East High School, has been known by his chosen name since seventh grade. However, due to the new legislation, he had to appeal to his teachers to continue using his chosen name.
"In the first week of school, I tried to convince my teachers to call me Ethan," Ethan explained. "I showed them my ID to prove it." Despite his efforts, Ethan found himself called into the library a few weeks later, where he was issued a new ID featuring his deadname. Some teachers seem to deliberately use his legal name, outing him to his peers and causing him considerable distress.
The Leander school district, just north of Austin, has adopted a slightly more flexible approach. Faculty there can continue using a student's preferred name if it was in use prior to the law's implementation. However, for new students, chosen names and pronouns related to social transitioning are not permitted. Conner Carlow, a classroom support specialist in the district, empathizes with the students' struggles.
"I remember grappling with my own identity in middle school," Carlow shared. "I didn't tell my parents what I was experiencing, so I understand why these kids might not either. It's significant that they confide in us teachers first, and it's heartbreaking that we can't show acceptance in return."
In another part of Texas, the Conroe school district, which includes Woodlands High School, has also barred teachers from using gender-affirming names and pronouns. This environment has made students like junior Cassie Hilborn hesitant to come out as transgender. Despite the challenges, Cassie finds solace in her school's Dungeons & Dragons club, where her peers and a supportive faculty adviser use her chosen name.
"Every day I hear about more rights we've lost," Cassie lamented. "Even if teachers wanted to support us, they're not allowed to." As a small act of defiance, Cassie uses blue masking tape to cover her deadname on her school ID.
The "Don't Say Gay" law is not just a series of restrictions; it's a catalyst for fear and uncertainty among transgender students. The law's reach extends beyond the classroom, affecting students' mental health and sense of safety. Many students feel isolated, their identities invalidated by a system that refuses to acknowledge them.
As the months progress, the full impact of the "Bill of Parental Rights" will continue to unfold. Advocacy groups and concerned citizens are calling for reforms to protect the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ students. Meanwhile, students like Ethan and Cassie are finding ways to cope and continue their fight for recognition and equality.
The resilience of these students and the support from allies within their communities are crucial as they navigate the challenges imposed by this legislation. The stories emerging from Texas serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the importance of standing up against policies that undermine equality and acceptance.
