Oxford Street, Sydney just got a splash more colorful! A local LGBTQ+ venue, originally known as "Pink Pony," has undergone a name change, listening closely and responding graciously after feedback from its vibrant community. Now, it's proudly rebranded as ‘TRIBE @ 231'.
When "Pink Pony" was first chosen, it aimed high, hoping it would connect with all members from across LGBTQ+ identities. But things didn't go as planned. Owners Kevin Du-Val, 80, and Michael Lewis, 57, weren't exactly anticipating such strong reactions. With a focus on drawing young gay men, they quickly found themselves at odds with wider community expectations. Even though Chappell Roan's track, a lesbian anthem, was supposed parallel their mission...
"Everyone's invited," mentioned Lewis. "But yeah, we're looking at 90% gay men as our main crowd." This narrow focus didn't sit well with everyone, prompting calls from members who felt their voices needed more space in this welcoming conversation.
Taking a step back and listening, Kevin and Michael took their critics seriously. They jumped on social media, owning up with a heartfelt apology, admitting that “Pink Pony” might not have been their best choice. They were determined, though, swiftly announcing their new identity as ‘TRIBE @ 231' with a renewed promise: an unwavering commitment that embraces every letter in LGBTQI+.
Nestled in Sydney's energetic LGBTQ+ heart, ‘TRIBE @ 231' isn't just about a name change. It's three floors bursting with different sounds, from timeless queer tracks and live drag shows, spinning DJs, and inclusive facilities that echo accessibility at every corner.
Bouncing back strongly, by October 21st, management took once more their Instagram channel, reinforcing their inclusive vision. They said it simply: “Let what feels good and who it attracts shape us.” A nod back too, they assured no one would be left feeling apart, stepping away from past door policies that might've seemed less inviting.
Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" isn't just any track; it echoes her memorable time at The Abbey, West Hollywood's adored queer spot. Her song, filled with self-acceptance and freedom, speaks volumes in our community. The original venue name, tied so closely with Roan's own journey, hit a nerve about how carefully we name spaces meant as havens.
Roan's shared a glimpse behind it all, highlighting her awakening at The Abbey. "I saw those go-go dancers and thought, wow, that could be me," she reflected — a testament on how a free-spirited space can inspire one's true self.
“Pink Pony Club" didn't just soar on charts in 2025 — it captured how significant acceptance can be. Although ‘Pink Pony' was envisioned with good intentions, by listening and adjusting, Kevin and Michael showed they're open and ready, learning and growing with their community.
As ‘TRIBE @ 231' prepares warmly welcoming its very first visitors, anticipation builds. Kevin and Michael are looking ahead, hopeful about creating a haven where every person across LGBTQI+'s spectrum finds joy and recognition. They're keen on keeping conversations open, encouraging everyone in their community club, and hearing insights that'll only make them more inclusive still as they move forward.
